November is diabetes awareness month and today November 14 is world diabetes day. How diabetes became apart of our everyday life. On May 5 2017 our family was changed forever. Our then 8 month old son Quinn, was taken to hospital with what we thought was a terrible flu. We soon realized he was in Diabetic ketoacidosis. ... Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious condition that can lead to diabetic coma or even death. When your cells don't get the glucose they need for energy, your body begins to burn fat for energy, which produces ketones. Ketones are when your body doesn’t have enough insulin it burns fat for energy, because sugar is unavailable. If this is left unregulated it will produce a toxic ketone. This causes DKA. This is the scenario we found ourselves in. His pancreas was no longer producing insulin. He was then diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Type one diabetes. What is type one diabetes? a chronic condition in which the pancreas does not produce insulin. Basically is Beta cells attacked and killed his pancreas. This was Pre determined in his genetic make up. Nothing could have been don’t to prevent it. We are now over three years in to living life with this disease. Everyday has its own challenges, some day less sleep then others. we work hard to keep his blood sugar in range and allow him to live as normal life as possible. He is a very tough and resilient boy. We are extremely proud of how he handles himself living with diabetes. We are we forever thankful for the support we receive and the technology that is available to us. Today Quinn is your typical 4 year old kid. Attends preschool and daycare. Is extremely active and living his best life. ( in a pandemic). His fight will always be our fight until the day a cure is found.
