There has been a variety of response to the delayed return to the salon. Most people are thankful for my decision. Others in theory support it but want a friggin haircut! You know what ? Dear clients, Yesterday it was announced that salons in Toronto are able to re-open on Wednesday June 24. I‘m sure this is very welcome news as everyone is anxious to lose their pandemic-do but I would like to ask for your patience just a little longer. After much consideration, I’ve decided to wait until July 13 to begin seeing clients. I know it’s an extra couple of weeks but, out of perhaps an abundance of caution, I would feel more confident in being able to adequately ...provide the safest environment possible, both for you and myself, if there has been a bit of time to iron out any wrinkles in the new routine and protocol at the salon. Dear clients and friends of Hair’N After, Here is An UPDATE Let's Start With A Chuckle ... BEFORE COVID 19 and AFTER COVID 19 !!! JUNE 1st Hoping to START BACK. I won’t need to cut your hair. You’ll have pulled it out by then ! It is anyone’s guess when the hair salons will reopen. We have been told by our officials it will happen after the May long weekend. I will start booking clients June 1st for the more optimistic, but my guess is that we won’t open until June 15th ea...rliest. Flexibility is the word of the day! Anyone booked before June 1st will need to rebook. I will personally contact you so we can keep you included in the schedule. When the doors open everyone will need a hair cut. By keeping you booked in, you have something (relatively tangible ) to look forward to and a designated time slot in what will be an extremely busy salon scenario. This craziness will pass. I’m guessing ( hoping ) that by April 20th the virus curve will have flattened and we’ll be able to relax a bit more. Therefore, Hair ‘n After will be CLOSED FOR SERVICE UNTIL APRIL 20th, 2020. I’ve had bad luck calling most of you. The V M response is person is unavailable ! The lines are probably ...overwhelmed. I will now resort to texting. CORONAVIRUS Response: Dear clients and friends of Hair’N After, I hope this finds you healthy and safe. Here is both my optimistic response along with a potentially more realistic response to the Corona Virus. This Virus has us all dealing with the unknown. As of last Saturday I haven’t been servicing clients. The nature of the business allows me the honour of sharing your personal space. However , this isn’t in keeping with the social distancing the world is now employin...g. For the safety of my clients and myself I have opted for the safe route. Optimistically, I will service clients from March 28th onward. I will call clients booked before the 28th to rebook at a later date. The holiday I had planned the first week of April has been cancelled so I have openings to accommodate those of you I have to rebook. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience. When I return to work I will be wearing both a mask and gloves and encourage you to support a mask as much as possible. I will call all clients 3 days before your appointment to review the status of the virus. Hopefully we can get back to a normal lifestyle sooner than later. On the realistic side the government may make the decision for us. Actually I am surprised the hairstyling business along with services like massage, dental hygiene and manicurists haven’t already been close due to the personal contact entailed in these fields. I believe there will be an announcement this week closing these kind of businesses for probably up to a month. Regardless you will eventually need a haircut - or a braid...lol. Let us wait to see what this week brings and then rebook your appointment. Curly hair tends to be more dry than other kinds of hair so extra care is needed, especially in our dry, heat-filled houses. 2) Get a CUT suited for curly hair. Not all stylists know how to cut curly hair and different kinds of curl needs different cutting techniques. Ask your stylists if they are familiar with curly hair. 3) Shampoo less, RINSE MORE! When shampoo is not completely rinsed out it dries the hair and encourages nasty tangles. If you can wash your hair 2 to 3 times a week instead of every day, this will help the dryness significantly. (Curly hair tends to be less oily so this is easier to do) 4) CONDITION EVERY TIME. Conditioner closes the cuticle so that the hair tangles less, shines more and allows the curls to gather and stay like curls rather than a head of frizz. You can actually use a little conditioner as styling product. 5) Use STYLING PRODUCTS that will coagulate the hair into clumps of curl. Again, this reduces the frizz, builds the shine and overall, gives a finished look. It generally is better to choose a product that is less sticky and water soluble because during the day, when your hair starts to loose it’s finished look, you can scrunch some water into the hair. FRIENDS ON FRIDAY at HAIR N AFTER (one of you pays 1/2) HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WASH MY HAIR? Q: When I was a kid in the 60‘s, everyone use to wash their hair once a week. As an adult, I wash my hair every day. My hair doesn't really get dirty from day to day. How often should I wash my hair?... A: The answer will vary from person to person. The rule of thumb, as obvious as it sounds is, wash your hair when it is dirty! If you have been sweating and your hair is oily and stuck to your head, wash it. If you have been partying in a smoky environment and you smell like an ashtray, wash it. If you have had an inactive week, your hair isn’t weighed down with product and it is actually looking quite nice (!), why wash it? Every time you wash your hair you are removing the natural oils your body produces to lubricate and protect it. I think the hair care companies have had a huge influence on our shampooing habits. Of course they want you to wash your hair every day - more washes, more product you need to use (both washing and styling products), which means more sales for them. Some people swear they can not wake up unless they shower and wash their hair. Hey, maybe try just wetting your hair instead. Or, try not washing it on the weekends. Any small measure like that will help the health of your hair and scalp. You can also save a bundle of money in hair care products. It’s worth a try! If you just don’t feel clean unless you wash you hair every day, make sure you use a shampoo that is low in salt. Yes, shampoo has salt. Non-professional shampoo has lots of salt. Why? Salt makes lather and people like lots of lather but, this is a topic for another day! And, if you are washing your hair every day, please make sure you condition it every day also. Otherwise, your hair will be squeaky clean but dry, brittle, dull and lacking luster. My favourite shampoo and conditioner, especially for our dry winters, is Kevin Murphy’s HYDRATE-ME WASH and HYDRATE-ME RINSE - $26 each (tax included) for a 250 ml bottle. This product is very concentrated. It’s more expensive than drug store brands but you need very little to do the job - a dab the size of a dime. Importantly, these products have no parabins, no sulphates, and very little salt. This product is available at Hair n After.

DANDRUFF or just DRY SKIN? Q: How can I tell if I have dandruff or just dry skin? A: Look at your legs and other skin areas. Are they dry too? Are they shedding skin? Chances are, and for most people, it is just dry skin. Winter, with the indoors heating we need, often encourages our skin to be dry. Dandruff is like a hyper-state of dry skin and produces large flakes that pretty well cover your shoulders. Bring it to the attention of your doctor if this sounds like you. Dos...: Moisturize with a hair product that you can rely on as being more than just a diluted Vaseline! Kevin Murphy’s HYDRATE ME is incredible - in fact, it can actually be used on your dry legs! There are tar shampoos designed for dandruff - smelly, not elegant, but it works. Don’ts: Reach for Head and Shoulders. Products like this remove three to five fine layers of skin. Your flakes may be gone for a day but you have thrown your system into high-drive where it will, in the end, over produce more skin and hence, give you more flakes.

WILL I GO BALD? Q: My mom told me it I wear baseball caps too much, I will go bald. Is that true? A: Baldness is a great concern to many people, particularly men. Baldness is determined mainly by our gene pool. Hair genes are carried through the matrimonial pool - look at your mother’s family. If you’re a male, look at your uncles and grandfather on her side. If they have a full head of hair, chances are high that you will enjoy the same. There are always the exceptions bu...t for the most part this is usually the case. The same rules apply to females, although only 3% of females have a balding pattern. Will wearing caps, construction hats or hoodies make you bald? The scalp needs to breathe and if there is a constant friction in an area it could cause breakage and damage to the roots of the hair. However, you would have to sleep with the cap on in order for it to really be an issue. Your mother probably told you a number of things to get you to do things her way! Surprise, surprise. Dos: Massaging the scalp brings a refreshed blood supply to the root, which in turn feeds it nutrient and oxygen. This will not bring back lost hair, but it will certainly help to keep the hair you have healthy and less likely to die. There are hair transplants (permanent measure hopefully) where they take the hair and it’s follicle from other areas of the head and surgically implant it into areas where there is no hair. This can be very successful but it is also very expensive and the results are not guaranteed. There are also topical solutions that you apply to the thinning area, that open up the root to receiving more nutrients. This is a temporary measure ie the effects stop when you stop applying the solution, and results are not at all guaranteed. This method could also have negative side affects. Read the label before buying. Don’ts: Shaving the head does not make you have more hair. Your hair may appear thicker when it grows in because all of the hair will be new and growing in together. But, this in no way gives you more hair follicles, hence more hair.
