Wondering how much you could save with a solar energy system? Use our calculator to find out. Solar panels provide long-term, ongoing returns on your initial investment. The exact amount you’ll save depends on a number of factors, including the size of the solar array and the rate at which grid energy costs increase. Once your solar panels are installed, they’ll be generating energy at no additional cost so when grid prices rise, so do your savings. Try it out here: https://hakaienergysolutions.com/calculator/

Ever wonder what happens to excess energy from a grid-tied solar power system? The net-metering program with BC Hydro allows solar system owners to save, and even make money off of the excess energy their system produces! If the PV system is generating more than the home is consuming, the current will flow back to the utility grid and be credited towards the user’s future consumption. On the anniversary date of joining the net-metering program, if the system has generated mo...re energy than the home has used, BC Hydro will pay the user 9.99 cents/kWh! CBC posted an article about a large-scale solar install we did this fall in Northern BC! With the help of carbon-neutral funding from the Ministry of Education, Hakai Energy Solutions completed a large solar array for Naghtaneqed Elem-Jr Secondary. The remote school is located in the Nemiah Valley, BC and enrols students of Chilcotin First Nations ancestry in Kindergarten to Grade 10. The energy generated from the project will almost entirely replace the diesel generators that the school previously relied on, saving the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District an estimated $50,000 per year in fuel costs.

As the first regional community college in British Columbia, Selkirk College has a history of being innovative and forward-thinking. Now, new initiatives at the Castlegar campus show the college's commitment to reducing energy consumption and developing onsite renewable energy. Sustainability is being incorporated into all aspects of the college; within operations, research endeavors, curriculum, and overall campus culture. These initiatives, and many more, have helped Selki...rk College achieve a STARS silver rating - twice - from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The STARS system - Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System - is the most widely recognized framework in the world for publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college or university’s sustainability performance. In October 2019, Selkirk College took their sustainability commitment one step further. They were determined to utilize a solar project substantial enough to showcase what’s possible for an educational facility of their size, so they contracted Hakai Energy Solutions to design and install a large solar array on the main building of the campus.

Central Saanich Fire Hall No. 1 serves as the municipality’s primary fire station, plus it accommodates both volunteer and career personnel, operates as the district's Emergency Operations Centre, and houses the district’s IT infrastructure. It's a critical building for community safety, and an integral part of Central Saanich. Over the course of 3 months, Hakai's design team visited the fire station to plan and install the energy system, which holds 360 solar panels in two ...lots - one on the larger east roof, and a smaller one on the west roof. Together the arrays generate over 143,000 kilowatt hours per year. with a peak output of 100 kilowatts A/C, the maximum allowable capacity under BCHydro's net metering program. Now completed, Central Saanich Fire Station No. 1 is able to produce the majority of its own energy needs using two self-contained energy sources: solar and geothermal.
