The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit distributed the following press release this afternoon regarding recommended precautions for residents... to take this Thanksgiving weekend to prevent the spread of COVID-19. ---- With the Thanksgiving holiday almost here, area residents are being reminded to serve up COVID-19 safety with the usual fall festive fare. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is encouraging everyone to reduce the spread of COVID-19 during the holiday long weekend. This includes staying close to home as much as possible and ideally only marking Thanksgiving with those in your immediate household. Thanksgiving is traditionally the time to celebrate the fall harvest and gather with family, friends and loved ones, says Dr. Lynn Noseworthy, Medical Officer of Health with the HKPR District Health Unit. This year, we ask people to be mindful of COVID-19 and celebrate Thanksgiving differently to reduce the spread of the virus. We’re now in the second wave and with cases of COVID-19 rising across Ontario, it’s essential we do our part to protect the health of our community. Local residents are encouraged to connect with family and friends either virtually or outdoors over Thanksgiving. Connecting by phone, social media or video conferencing can still allow people to get together albeit remotely. If an in-person visit with family or friends is planned for Thanksgiving, it’s best to hold festivities outdoors staying within gathering limits and keeping a 2-metre (6-foot) physical distance from others. Face coverings should also be worn. If any participants feel sick, they should stay home and not visit anyone. While we realize this year’s Thanksgiving may not be what we’re used to, these precautions are necessary to help reduce everyone’s risk of COVID-19, Dr. Noseworthy adds. If students are coming home from college or university for Thanksgiving, the Health Unit urges extra precautions. It’s important for students who are back home to practise proper hand hygiene, wear a face covering indoors and keep at least 2 metres distance, especially while eating or drinking. If they are feeling sick, students should not return home for Thanksgiving. Keeping food safety in mind for Thanksgiving is also important, such as ensuring meat is cooked to a safe internal temperature. But it doesn’t end there, as people should also consider COVID-19 prevention tips when serving and preparing food. It’s recommended that food be plated individually by someone who is symptom-free and knowledgeable in safe food handling. Do not share food and beverages buffet or family style. Thanksgiving is a time to appreciate what we have, so let’s celebrate smartly and safely as we do our best to flatten the COVID-19 curve, Dr. Noseworthy adds.

Reminder During Hunting Season Please be advised that the Provincial guidelines established as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic apply to all hunt camps. This m...eans that you cannot have more than 10 people inside your hunt camp as per the current gathering limit. Remember that you need to maintain physical distancing of 6 feet or more and to wear a face mask unless the others in your group are within your immediate household. When travelling to a hunt camp remember to follow any travel advisories for the area. Ensure physical distancing by sticking to only 2 people per vehicle. The second person should sit in the back passenger side seat to ensure distance from the driver. Masks should also be worn at this time. The only exception to this limit is if travelling with people from your immediate household.

Planned power outage to affect 6,000 Hydro One customers on Sunday, September 27, 2020: Hydro One crews completing upgrades in the Minden and surrounding areas... this weekend Hydro One is advising residents in the Minden and surrounding areas of a planned power outage on Sunday, September 27 required for crews to safely complete upgrades to local equipment and perform scheduled maintenance. When: Sunday, September 27 between 7 am and 3 pm Where: The planned outage will affect approximately 6,000 Hydro One customers in the following areas: Galway, Minden, Somerville, Minden Hills, Snowdon, Glamorgan and Cavendish (see map below) What: Hydro One crews will be completing required upgrades and performing scheduled maintenance to help ensure a safe and reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses. This includes the installation of three smart switches, which is equipment that helps to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages, while limiting the amount of customers affected. Crews will also replace 43 poles that have reached their expected service life with a mix of wood and composite poles, which help to deter woodpeckers. Additional crews and equipment are being brought in to complete as much local area work as possible during this outage. We know this is a challenging time to be without power and we would like to thank our customers for their patience during this time. Below are some tips to help you and your family during an outage: Make sure your appliances are in the off position, such as the stove. Make sure your devices, such as a smart phone, and extended battery packs are fully charged. Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Use a cooler with ice for items you’ll need during the planned outage. Consider filling jugs of water to use for drinking and cooking if you have a generator. If you plan to use a generator, remember to use it in a dry area outdoors away from any open windows, doors and vents. Visit the Electrical Safety Authority at esasafe.com for more tips. If you have a bathtub, consider filling it with water before the planned outage begins. You can use the water and a bucket to fill your toilet tank to be able to flush. In order to ensure our crews can continue working for all Ontarians, we ask that customers respect physical distancing. Affected customers are notified via auto dialer and can visit Hydro One’s outage map or call 1-888-664-9376 for additional information.

What is PPE? It's an acronym that you've likely heard a lot in the past few week. It stands for Personal Protective Equipment, and it’s one crucial way to both ...stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep healthcare workers (paramedics, doctors, nurses, other caregivers) currently on the pandemic's frontlines safe. PPE works as a barrier between an individual’s skin, mouth, nose, or eyes and viral and bacterial infections. While there is a large diversity of PPE types that provide varying degrees of protection, they all have one thing in common, they are designed to offer a level of protection depending on the environment they may be used in. Understanding what, when, how and why to wear any level of PPE is important to ensure misuse of it as well as protecting yourself when putting it on and off. #paramedicservicesweek #psweek #renfrewcounty #helpushelpyou #stayinformed
