The Halifax Humanities Society is accepting applications for its 2020/2021 class! We offer FREE liberal arts classes taught by university professors for adults living on low incomes in Nova Scotia. Starting in January, Halifax Humanities 101 follows the curriculum of the Foundation Year Program at the University of King’s College, and takes students on a tour through the philosophy, literature, art, theology, theatre, and political theory that has influenced the Western tra...dition. We read authors like Plato, Dante, Shakespeare, Frederick Douglass, Karl Marx, and Simone de Beauvoir, with a community of curious, passionate people who love to read and learn. We provide free books and childcare, and if you live in HRM and lack access to technology, we may be able to help with that too. Our class this year will take place completely online. You bring your love of learning we provide the rest. To apply, visit http://www.halifaxhumanitiessociety.ca/form/contact. For more information, call 902-425-7589 or email [email protected]. See more

Are you interested in studying classic works of literature and philosophy? The Halifax Humanities Society is excited to offer a new session of its fundraising program, Halifax Thinks! Halifax Thinks gives students an opportunity to follow curriculum based on the University of King's College Foundation Year Program. Students receive 12 recorded lectures written and delivered by university professors which they can listen to at their convenience. Twice a month, all participant...s are invited to a real-time Zoom tutorial where they get to discuss the work with a university professor and with others in the class. This session of HalifaxThinks is entitled The Medieval Period, and it corresponds roughly with the major works from the second section of the Foundation Year Program. Students will learn about early texts in the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions; art and architecture from the Medieval period; and Dante’s magnum opus, The Divine Comedy. The proceeds of this program will support the Halifax Humanities Society's other programs, which provide free humanities education to adults living on low incomes. To register or to learn more, please visit their website: http://halifaxhumanitiessociety.ca/halifaxthinks
