Halifax Blue Dot movement 26.04.2021

The NAACP just published a report titled Fossil Fuel Foolery, which identified 10 tactics that the fossil fuel industry used as excuses for not accepting accountability for its impacts on the environment and human health. The industry used a long list of deceptive tactics that concealed environmental destruction harming Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) as well as low-income communities. Not surprising the fossil fuel industry only cares about money, and if the planet and human health stand in the way of that, so be it.

Long-term, fossil-fuel burning, particularly coal, which is high in sulphur and the sulphur can be transported long distances to Nova Scotia, Shannon Sterling, a professor in the Earth and Environmental Sciences department at Dalhousie and the lead author of the study, said of the catalyst for bringing out the aluminum concentrations. Sterling said the aluminum is in the soil, but the acid rain or acid snow that has collected acidic particles from industrial pollution takes... the good calcium nutrients out of the soil and allows the release of aluminum concentrations. It’s natural in the soil, Sterling said. With un-human impacted soils, the aluminum stays in the soil. Source : https://www.saltwire.com//aluminum-concentrations-in-nova/

Keeping citizens healthy is not an end-goal for policy, but the starting point for a flourishing society, for all of the things we want to achieve individually and together. Our prerequisites for health are the fundamental conditions and resources, like access to affordable, good quality food, stable shelter, income, social justice and equity. Health, you might say, is a provincial responsibility. It is. But with health as a resource, our municipality can flourish. Without so...cial and structural environments that support good health, it is very hard for residents to make healthy decisions like purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables or to be active enough for health benefits. Please remember that you are in a position to make the right decisions to continue to support healthy environments. Source : https://www.halifaxexaminer.ca//open-letter-from-dalhousi/

Some speculated that Biden’s stance on fossil fuel divestment, especially his comments during the final presidential debate on moving away from fossil fuels, might have turned away voters worried about their job security in these key states. Yet, the election results have shown the opposite.
