April is National Poetry Month! This year the theme is resilience. The League of Canadian Poets shares: "What does it mean to be resilient? We meet resilience in every corner we’ve been backed into, every hardship that we endure. Resilience is geographical, spiritual, historical. It’s the fight against climate change, the inner battle with mental health, the outcry for human rights and an end to systemic racism. Resilience is the backbone of generations of trauma, the silence at the dinner table, the bow to culture’s violin. Resilience is the courage to start each day anew. This NPM 2021, we celebrate, reflect on and respect the resilience that has made us who we are." Join us in celebrating National Poetry Month by finding poetry that speaks to you.

Literacy Nova Scotia will be celebrating #AdultLearnersWeek2021 from April 5 9. We’re looking for learners we can highlight through our #ALW2021 social media ...campaign. Do you have learner(s) in your programs who would be willing to share a bit of their story to help encourage others to return to learning? We’d love to celebrate and acknowledge their learning journey. We are looking for videos, pictures and a brief bio/story. We can help with the recordings and provide prompting questions as needed. Other examples can be found on our website under the learner tab at: https://www.literacyns.ca/alw.htm Every story is unique and reaches out encouraging others to follow their dreams or to create a new vision for their future. Please let us know if you have a learner in mind. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have. Email [email protected] #LiteracyChangesLives

The 2021 African Heritage Month theme, Black History Matters: Listen, Learn, Share and Act, recognizes the important legacy of people of African descent and the... long-standing history in the development of Canada. The theme brings focus and increased awareness of racialized issues of a community that has overcome great adversity for inclusion. It further calls on us to listen, learn, share and act to make society a better place. Nova Scotia has over 50 historic African Nova Scotian communities with a long, deep, and complex history dating back over 400 years. African Heritage Month provides us with another opportunity to celebrate our culture, legacy, achievements, and contributions of people of African Descent past and present.
