This week for Clinkscales’ Corner we recognize Business is Jammin' for everything they do in our community! Business is Jammin’ (BIJ) is a province-wide charitable initiative of the Black Business Initiative. BIJ focuses on motivating Black youth and stresses the importance of education and personal development in all of its programs. BIJ's goals are to deliver a comprehensive enterprise and entrepreneurship learning strategy and instill business skills that will offer long-t...erm benefits to young people. They work with young people through a range of educational, social, mentorship, and financial support programs to build business acumen and leadership skills. In the last decade they've helped inspire thousands of program participants to stay in school, start up their own ventures, and bring an exceptional level of professionalism to any workplace. With social distancing practices implemented, BIJ has leveraged creativity and technology to digitally connect Black and racially visible youth in Nova Scotia to a variety of free programs and initiatives. Within the last few months, BIJ has hosted a leadership cohort initiative, a virtual book club and a coding program for youth in rural communities. BIJ has an ongoing Virtual Webinar Series for young entrepreneurs, is planning a Community Youth Art Project and has amazing programs to offer to community in the coming months! You can follow BIJ on Instagram at @bijyouth or visit our website www.businessisjammin.ca to stay in the know!

This week for Clinkscales' Corner we recognize Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax for everything they do in our community! Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates developmental relationships between a carefully selected adult and a young person facing adversity. Intended to challenge growth and provide support, these relationships expand possibilities for youth, igniting their potential. Consistent, positive interactions, over a period of time with an engaged adult improve social emotional competence, mental health and well-being, and enhance connectedness in school, community and work. Ultimately, this results in young people better prepared to fulfill their potential.

It's with heavy hearts that we write to our fans with sad news about one of our own. Mike Poole, who played for us for three seasons, suffered a tragic fall this week. We have received updates from a close friend and have been informed he is out of danger. We wish Mike a full and speedy recovery, and know that all Canes fans wish the same. While with the Halifax Hurricanes, Mike Poole was known for his presence on and off the court. Our fans loved to watch the passion Mike br...ought to every game and he built strong relationships with the basketball community here in Halifax. Get well soon, Mike. We're praying for you.

This week for Clinkscales' Corner we recognize Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Halifax for everything they do in our community! The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Halifax is a charity which serves thousands of children and youth at 7 different club sites in Cole Harbour, Dartmouth, Sackville, and Spryfield. The Club hosts breakfast, food security, after school, summer camp, leadership, education, and youth drop-in programs. Many Club kids feel their Club is their second hom...e, and a safe and supportive space to develop healthy relationships, overcome barriers, and to learn from positive role models. Club sites across Greater Halifax closed this spring due to the pandemic, but they reopened in July to serve kids in their summer day camps! The Boys and Girls Club is also engaging kids across the municipality by hosting free, online summer camps. The Club is busy preparing for its after school and youth drop-in programs this fall. Through the Club’s programs, through relationship-building and mentoring, it strives to create a sense of belonging. The Club allows kids be free to be themselves despite their daily challenges, and is one of their core values. With social isolation and physical distancing the norm, a sense of belonging and connection have become even more important and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Halifax is ready to adapt and serve children and youth! We are taking Clinkscales’ Corner online! During the 2019/20 season we recognized organizations that work with youth and made a positive impact in our community. Through the help of one of the Hurricanes’ owners, we were able to provide these organizations with tickets to home games. We are continuing this initiative on social media by recognizing and promoting well deserved organizations and people who are making our world a better place. For our first Clinkscales’ Corner, w...e would like to recognize Stop the Violence (STV). This local not-for-profit organization is headed by our very own Halifax Hurricanes Ambassador, Quentrel Provo! After the tragic death of his cousin Kaylin in August 2012, Quentrel decided to take his anger, hurt, frustration and pain and turn it into something positive to make a difference and started Stop the Violence (STV). He held the first ever STV March to Raise Awareness around the issue of violence in September 2012. Since STV’s inception, Quentrel has held annual marches against violence and started STV clothing brand (not just a brand, it’s a stand against violence), STV Christmas Toy Drive, and STV Dance Party for School Supplies (in partnership with HFX Dancing Cop Jordan Sheppard, HRP, and Halifax Fire). Quentrel has shared his message through STV by speaking at hundreds of schools and events over the years. He continues his efforts, while mentoring youth from all walks of life, and has been recognized for his work. To learn more about Quentrel, STV, and his accomplishments follow him here: @mr_stop_the_violence What’s next for STV: Youth Talk Show called That’s What’s Up and Young Leaders of Today Shaping Tomorrow Conference and Awards Show

To understand how we got to where we are today, we have to better understand our history. We've been reading about three major black migrations to Nova Scotia to educate ourselves on how and why systemic racism exists in our community. We recommend reading up on Black Loyalists, Jamaica Maroons, and War of 1812 Refugees. When we know better, we do better.

Our community, our province, and our country has experienced another tragic event which has taken the life of one of our own. Let us remember Captain Jennifer Casey and the message she was delivering across Canada with the Royal Canadian Air Force. In difficult times there is always hope and individuals willing to help raise the spirits of the people around them. Thank you for your service.
