1) Open fires & chopping trees in any of our parks & protected areas are big no-no's. This includes just about everywhere I have listed on HalifaxTrails.ca. 2) Leave No Trace campfire guidelines: https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/minimize-campfire-impacts/ 3) Buy a stove and/or fire dish: https://shop.halifaxtrails.ca/product-tag/stove/ 4) Burn Safe, check local conditions: https://novascotia.ca/burnsafe/

Another big weekend of outdoor adventures in HRM. With over 10, 000 page views this weekend, the HalifaxTrails website was put to good use. I'd love to be able to keep adding, updating & maintaining it as a FREE resource for everyone regardless of socioeconomics. If you want to help me introduce more people like yourself to Nova Scotia's great outdoors, while spotlighting and promoting local volunteer groups and causes; become a supporter: https://www.halifaxtrails.ca/blog/support/

My top nine of 2020 on Instagram. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy 2021! Top left to bottom right: #MusquodoboitTrailway, #HemlockRavine, #NineMileRiverTrails, #SusieslLke, #PennantrRver , #BLTtrail, #BluffwWldernessTrail, #SaltmarshTrail, #CharliesLakeTrail. Thank you for supporting my work. Each , comment & follow has resulted in a big year of growth that's helped catapult this project to the top of many a Google search results page. I'll continue advocating for what I... believe in, and I thank you for helping me build a platform to do so. At its core, this halifaxtrails.ca project is to get more people outdoors, appreciating Nova Scotia's greatest assets and all of nature's benefits. With that, I am succeeding in numbers that used to be a distant wish. This past year's forced re-alignment of our priorities has shown that people realize the importance of nature now more than ever. With my supportive audience, I've been able to help guide HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS, of visitors in 2020. Incredible numbers, thanks to a core audience who has been behind this project for a long time, and plenty of new supporters who have helped bring it to a new level. THANK YOU ALL! Happy Trails! https://www.instagram.com/p/CJhoHyOH5BL/ See more
Did you know this about orange peels? I didn't. Basically nothing eats them and they take a long time to naturally biodegrade. Similar story with banana peels. It's good to know, but it doesn't change any of my habits. I pack out EVERYTHING I bring in. I also pack an extra plastic bag for whatever else I see laying around and can safely bring out with me. If all of us responsible hikers do this, we will outnumber the jerks and keep our favourite trails clean.
Labi Kousoulis, Iain Rankin, Randy Delorey These issues, including #SaveTheMainlandMoose & #SaveOwlsHead are top of mind for many of us who have registered (https://liberal.ns.ca/?delegate-registration) to vote for the next premier of #NovaScotia. http://nsforestnotes.ca//a-question-to-the-nova-scotia-li/

Coming from someone who has planted close to 1 million trees here in Nova Scotia (https://www.instagram.com/p/B25QTrxHj6j/), I can attest that this documentary is a very accurate insight into this deceptively complex socioeconomic experience. At the root of why I created HalifaxTrails.ca and why I'm still dismayed at the devastation of our forests. #Treeplanting has taught me a lot about myself, others, nature & society. It has been at the core of everything I have done since. https://www.cbc.ca//one-million-trees-documentary-tree-pla

Not for even less public access to coastal land? Not big on further decimation of biodiversity amidst a climate emergency/mass extinction? Don't approve of our provincial parks quietly being de-listed and gifted to American billionaires?. This news just gets shadier by the day. If you're not aware of this situation, I highly recommend joining this group. Especially important to consider with Ian Rankin now running for NS Liberal Party leadership: Save Little Harbour/Owls Head Nova Scotia From Becoming Golf Courses

I recently ran a series of polls on Twitter asking "which is your favourite rails-to-trails bike ride?". Trails stretching from Lunenburg to Musquodoboit were considered. Here's the one that came out on top (I am not surprised). Thanks to volunteers with the Cole Harbour Parks and Trails Association for making this trail the gem that it is! https://www.halifaxtrails.ca/salt-marsh-trail/

This needs to stop. Please contact NS Minister of Lands & Forestry right now to let him know that this decimation will not continue with your approval. I spent years in Nova Scotia's endless clearcuts planting monoculture tree farms, which have likely all been clearcut again by now. It's absurdly unsustainable, and flies in the face of the biodiversity emergency we have arrived at as a result. We should not allow these extinctions to happen on our watch, in our own backyard. We need bold, uncompromised leadership, a new direction toward sustainable, future-proof green industries, and a liveable future for our children. Demand it.
