No. 43 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. Earlier this year the Directors of the Sandon Historical Society decided to upgrade our display of vintage historical bottles found right in Sandon and at the innumerable mining camps centering on the communities of Sandon, Three Forks and Cody. We found that we had accumulated dozens and dozens of bottles of all types - many donated by local enthusiasts. We have liquor bottles, beer bottles, medicine bottles, chemi...cal bottles, food bottles, milk bottles, soda bottles, pop bottles, wine bottles, ink bottles, glue bottles, baby bottles and more. We have Japanese wine, liquor and beer bottles and Chinese soya sauce jugs. Earthenware jugs and crocks too. The bottles date from the earliest days of the Mining Boom in the early 1890's to the late 1950's and are of all manufacturing types: many are mouth blown with hand formed tops - others are machine made or partially machine made. But what to do with them all??? New display shelving was built and installed and dozens of bottles were washed, sorted and evaluated - ready for display. But we needed something to make the bottles come alive - to tell their story. After considerable research we decided to select some for replica labelling. We were able to find images of period labels that would be appropriate for certain individual bottles. These labels then had to be sized to fit our particular bottles. We also decided to try to obtain copies of period advertising appropriate for our displays along with any historical information we thought might be of interest to our visitors. Now we just needed someone to print everything. THEN WE REMEMBERED HALL PRINTING in Nelson. Our experience with Hall's was positive right from the start. The Directors of the Society were so pleased they authorized further expenditures for printing and as this project has thus far been a great success, we anticipate labeling more bottles, building more displays and offering duplicates from our collection for sale as souvenirs next season. With 100 years serving our community we are certain that this is not the first time that Hall's has done first -rate work for someone in Sandon. It was indeed a great pleasure working with Hall's on this project and we wish them continued success over the next 100 years. CONGRATULATIONS ! - Sandon Historical Society #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing

No. 42 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. Memories From A Pressman - Part 2 My Blue Man Impression: One day on the 4 colour Ryobi, things were not going well. Paper got stuck in the cyan rollers and it was necessary to remove them to clean out the paper. In the process, much of my hands, arms, and even my face, were smudged with the ink! ... Most Excited Customer: I remember one time Dave gave me a piece of Lino art and told me to set it up for a customer who was coming in. I first had to glue the Lino onto a piece of board, then makeready on the Platen before the customer arrived. I had it set up, she came (a young lady) and I proceeded to run it; she jumped for joy to see her job coming off! And several times! A Boat Outing: In 1996 Dave treated all the staff to a fantastic trip to Kaslo for a boat adventure on the lake. First day, probably Saturday, I remember we camped on Mirror Lake just south of Kaslo overnight. Sunday, we embarked on two of the Kaslo Houseboats. Now the Kaslo Houseboats are not what most people think of as houseboats. They are real boats with a pointy end and a flat one, a nice Diesel engine and a wheelhouse with a real wheel! I got to be the captain! I got about 5 minutes instructions. I remember two or three stops, Johnson’s landing for one, and taking pictures of Indian Pictographs on the side of vertical cliffs along the lake. We stopped for a picnic somewhere with a gangplank from the boat to shore. - Les Otterbein #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing

No. 41 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. Memories From A Pressman - Part 1 My first time in Trail: I answered an ad in the Edmonton Journal for a pressman in 1989. As it happened I was able to drive out to Trail from Vermilion, Alberta around Christmas as the shop there was shut down for the holiday week. Dave Chartres arranged for a motel for me in Montrose, I drove there and met him the night before. In the morning he drove ahead of me into Trail. There... was heavy fog in the valley, and it looked like I was dropping off the edge of the world. I will never forget that My First Carpenter Job: A few months into my new job, Trail experienced a flood downtown. The Hall building, where the shop was in the basement, got six inches of water. Fortunately, nothing serious was damaged, the electric motors for the folder in particular was a concern. I remember work was slow and I was recruited to build wooden pallets to get the paper off the floor. - Les Otterbein #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing

No. 38 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. Multiple Talents of the Pressman Paul Bowles our pressman from 1989 2011 shared his other talents with Hall Printing during his tenure. He was the researcher and author of our Hall Printing history book published to celebrate our 75th anniversary in 1995. He spent many hours interviewing Hall family members and staff past and present. You are welcome to come into the Trail office and pick up a copy if you are int...erested to read it. Paul also is a poet, musician and calligrapher. He would produce a beautiful calligraphed poem for many noteworthy events. Pictured here is his piece Customer, artfully designed in 2004 for Dave and Gail. We have it displayed in our offices as the message is a critical part of our employees thought process as they do their daily work. We all felt very special when we received one of his art pieces. #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing

No. 40 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. My Hall Printing Story Christina Desireau Bookkeeper since 2015... First, some history: I was born in Trail in 19 ‘never-you-mind’ and raised in Montrose. I have very fond memories of my school days and my childhood friends (who are still in my life more than forty years later)! I left BC in the late 1980’s and I lived out east for almost 25 years. In 2014, I made the decision to move back to Trail. A lot of things changed over the years, but a lot of things stayed the sameit’s like I never left! I started working at Hall Printing in 2015 as a bookkeeper. Now, it’s true that I don’t normally use our super fun bindery equipment in my job and I prefer using our little copier for my accounting reports. I think our production colour copier is bigger than my car.so many buttons! Janice at our front desk can tell you that I am definitely not mechanically inclined, so it’s probably a really good thing that I’m the bookkeeper. My job is still pretty awesome though. I like numbers and I also like talking to our customers and suppliers. I have learned first-hand what an important impact Hall Printing has had on our local community. I can walk around Nelson, Castlegar and Trail and point out posters, brochures, tickets, menus and signs that were printed at Hall Printing. It really makes me proud to see the products that we make all around our city. Every day, I get to see new products or projects in production. Being a print shop in a small community means that we do a little bit of everything, and we truly do a little bit of everything! On a personal note, I also love to shop at Hall Printing. Christmas is easy for me. All of my friends love custom notepads! And what’s a birthday celebration without a banner or poster? This year is going to be special. My cousin, Kerra and I have talked about putting together a family cookbook for years. Since 2020 is the year of staying close to home, it’s the perfect time for us to finally take on this project. We are gathering recipes and pictures from my great-grandparents down to my littlest cousins. We can’t wait to work with my Hall Printing colleagues this fall on this little piece of our family history. Thank you Hall Printing and congratulations on your 100th birthday! - Christina Desireau #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing

No. 39 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. HiI’m Rebecca, and I like paper. I think you should too. There are so many kinds of paper, each with its own feel. They all tell a different story. Some are rough and rugged, ripped edges and heavy texture calling out to the past, telling of tales of a forgotten time. Some are smooth and sleek, shiny and glossy. The speak of sophistication, drawing you into a high society world of crisp suits and elegant dresses. T...hen there’s the bright ones. Bold colours, shimmering, shining, showy, bringing you back to your childhood, driving your creativity. With so many options, why not have some fun. Mix and match textures for you next project. Choose a bright colour and make your Flyer POP. Find a texture you love and use it for the cover of your next report. Print is tactile, it can be fun too. No. 37 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. LOOKING BACK AT HALL PRINTING I worked for Hall Printing from 1989 -2011, which was mid-life to retirement as a pressman making impressions of ink on paper in the back of the shop, out of view from the general public who frequented the front. It was one of the most significant opportunities of my life to work with a company of friendly people and to be a part of producing the stationery, posters and commercial requ...irements of Trail. Daily work was both a pleasure and a challenge, involving mixing and matching ink colours with a set of weigh scales and a formula for every tint under the sun. The printing press had to be reconfigured to accommodate differing types and weights of paper, card and envelopes. Numbering machines were positioned and bolted to cams with heavy inking units of rollers hefted into position. Outside of the 8 till 5 working hours It was a great pleasure for me personally to have been given the opportunity by my boss Dave Chartres, to collect the earliest history of Hall Printing for the record and the interest of customers. I conducted interviews and compiled the changes of people, place and equipment that represented a glimpse of a lifetime of enterprise in Trail. The livelihoods of employees have been maintained through service rendered to the community and a social network has been provided, both within Hall Printing and between customers who depended on their deadlines being met for designing and production of their project. Staff Christmas and retirement parties were held at venues such as the Ymir Hotel, the Old Schoolhouse Restaurant in Ootischenia, Café Michaels at Waneta and Amore’s in the Gulch. These were occasions for family and staff to enjoy fine repast and the more leisurely relationships with each other. Life was work and play; we even had a ball team for a brief period, pitted against other local teams. There was also disaster during the Trail flood of 1989. The presses were at the time located below ground level in the old Fields building. Though partially submerged, the equipment was salvaged but much paper stock was lost and the ever finely tuned deadlines were upended. The determination to survive setbacks and improve the condition of a business in progress led to the resituating and redesigning of Hall Printing many times over during the decades of its life. It is timely and appropriate to celebrate this 100th anniversary. Hall Printing has shaped many lives in the process of its industry. - Paul Bowles #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing

No. 36 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. I'd like to wish you a happy 100th birthday. As an artist living sometimes in Nelson, when I need to reproduce my paintings for sale, promotion or gifts, I love the friendly atmosphere and excellent customer service at your Nelson store. Colleen, Mackenzie and Vanessa have helped me many a time with a rush job. This image of an oil painting I made, "December Morning, Nelson" is an example. I'm what you might cal...l a small-potatoes customer, in terms of dollar volume. But the Nelson staff have never made to feel less-than-important, in the 13-ish years i've been going there. Quite the opposite, i really feel they go out of their way to be helpful. Here's to another 100 great years! - Niels Petersen #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing

No. 34 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. I was hired by Ingrid in December 2004 to take over her job as bookkeeper when she became the owner of Hall Printing. I worked for Dave and Gail for one month and then for Ingrid until I retired in April 2015. Ron, my husband, and I owned our own business until 2004 and luckily Ingrid had the same accountant and he recommended that Ingrid interview me. The rest is historythanks Don. I worked closely with Ingrid and... we also became good friends and still golf together in the summer. I learned a lot about the printing industry in my11 years and had many a good time as well. Besides being a great person to work for, she is also a very caring person and is always there for her employees when they needed a shoulder to lean on. In 2010 Hall Printing ventured into Laser Engraving and my husband Ron was hired to run that department until he retired in 2013. - Barb Pyett #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing

No. 31 | 100 Great Impressions of Hall Printing in 100 days. As a representative of a paper supplier (Coast Paper/Spicers), I was lucky enough to have dealt with Hall Printing from 1985 to my retirement in 2020. As I recall when I first visited them, the owners were Terry Campeau and Dave Chartres. I believe this changed in 1988 when Dave (and his wife Gail) bought out the printing portion of the company, while Terry maintained the stationary business. ... As time passed Ingrid (and Ron) Hope bought Hall Printing from Dave and Gail (2005). Business relationships can sometimes be challenging but dealing with all these owners (and staff) was a real treat and a privilege. There must be something in the water in the Kootenays as they were all first-class individuals that felt more like friends than customers. I treasure the memories of a golf game or a dinner while I was on a trip to the area. I was also always impressed with the professionalism they brought to the printing industry. This includes both awareness of customer service, as well as the latest technology in the printing trade. I continue to hold this company (and ownership) in the highest regard. - Dick Markin (retired Spicers 2020) A NOTE FROM INGRID: I still keep in touch with Dick and his wife Robyn. They have retired to Osoyoos where he is enjoying more time for family, music, golf and wine. Once COVID is over we hope to meet up for some more golf, food and wine of course. #hallprinting #100greatimpressionsin100days #trailbc #nelsonbc #printing
