Behind the Brush- With gallery artist, Joshua Wallace! This self portrait is painted by the artist himself! Just 25 years old, Joshua is a self-taught painter from Vernon, currently in his third year of a fine arts degree in Victoria. Remarkably, he didn’t pick up a brush until he was 16 when his high school art teacher noticed his skill in drawing and encouraged him to start working on canvas. In just eight years he has pushed his skillset to that of a first-rate talent ...combining excellent colour, composition, brushwork, and vision. Of course, this is just the beginning of his career. Encouraged to find his own path as an artist, Joshua paints what he would want on his own walls which frees him up to explore and experiment with different techniques and mediums, often combining acrylic and oil in the same painting as a piece evolves. After having become more comfortable with portraiture, I began broadening my painting to other subjects such as landscape. First inspired by my high-school teacher Brian Monteith's acrylic landscapes, then slowly onto the Group of Seven's traditional post impressionist oil landscapes. Behind the Brush- With gallery artist, Dominik Modlinski! Dominik Modlinski was born in 1970 in Warsaw, Poland. From an early age he studied printmaking and later attended the School for Artistic Crafts and Design in Warsaw. In 1987 he immigrated to Canada and studied fine arts at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, where he graduated with honours. It was while studying landscape painting, that Dominik was naturally drawn to the wilderness of Northern Ontario. Followi...ng his graduation he moved to the Algoma region of Ontario to paint at the Algoma School of Landscape Arts. Since then he continues his passion to paint landscapes in various locations around the globe. For over 15 years Dominik has consistently returned to his isolated cabin in the northern village of Atlin, BC to paint and explore. This remote location borders the Yukon and Alaska offering access to diverse, untouched ecosystems. Dominiks painting expeditions are a wilderness experience based upon weeks of traveling rugged and barren lands to capture the majesty of nature en plein air. His northern travels have inspired him to explore further and visit many of Earths last remaining wilderness areas. Modlinskis most extreme painting expeditions have taken him across Antarctica, Greenland, Patagonia and even into the wilds of Namibia and South Africa. As we witness the disappearance of land and nature around the globe, Modlinskis quest is to portray a need to preserve the beauty of our planet, through paintings, photographs, stories and videos.
