This weekend the mighty Exeter Chiefs face off against the resurgent Wasps in the Gallagher Premiership final. It should be a good match so if you can, see it. ...Lost to me, was that Wasps toured Canada in 1994/95 and played in Hamilton. Being pre-professional days, Wasps roster was filled with stars of the day as well as many, to-be star players. From recollections of Hornets players involved in that day and some literal license.........Wasps first team played NRU, who got spanked. Something like 86-3. However, before that spectacle, Wasps II played the Hornets. Before the game, Dan Powell, our captain, agreed with Wasps that they could substitute any players into the game who so far hadn’t played on the tour. Early in the game Hornets were awarded a line out close to the Wasps goal line. Tom Edwards threw in to Keith Stott, who passed the ball to Stan Double peeling around the back of the line. Stan barged into the defenders drawing them away from the touch line and passed the ball to Tom, who crashed over for a try. Wasps were pissed! One of their props gave their team an almighty bollocking as we attempted the conversion. Then, before the restart, they substituted 8 players and we never touched the ball again. Mark Kristafor remembers constant huddling between the posts watching their conversions. The final score is lost to foggy memories or maybe embarrassment. However, in typical Hornets style, Wasps loved our hospitality, they enjoyed the Tetleys in glass pints and shoot the boot was performed using a prosthetic leg! Thanks to Mark, Dan, Tom, Paul Gilchrist and Dean O’Callaghan for the memories and who were all on the team that day. I know, Stan and Keith were also on that team and probably Peter Thom, but the rest of the team is vague. If you were involved or have anything to add to, or correct the story or have a photo, let us know. By 1996, Wasps had split into two sides. Wasps RFC, the professional side and Wasps FC, the amateur side.
Who is ready for some post lock down rugby?
A fitting song for trying time.
Hornets and Supporters. Rugby Ontario has now released the Return to Rugby Plan (RTP). Hamilton Hornets are in the process of preparing for sanctioning so that we may resume Rugby in Hamilton. More to follow as we progress through the sanctioning process.
Rugby on the way back. Stay tuned. More to come from The Hornets.
Dear Hornet Membership, Supporters, Family and Friends, On behalf of your Hornet Executive Committee we would like to provide our membership an update on the club and our plans regarding the current COVID-19 situation. The Executive team have been conducting meetings via teleconference throughout the current situation and have explored many different options around returning to play. Today we would like to inform you of how we will be moving forward.... Rugby Canada has informed its members that it is highly possible there will not be any sanctioned rugby played in the 2020 season by any team. Rugby Ontario has recently moved to Phase 2 of its return to play plan which can be seen here. (https://www.rugbyontario.com/return-to-play/) As a club we have made the difficult decision to not resume a return to play in any form in the 2020 season. We value the safety of each and every member of our family and as such we feel with the short time remaining in this season and with no games to be played, the potential risk is far too great to our membership. The executive committee is currently working with Rugby Ontario to become fully sanctioned to resume play for the 2021 season and we are very excited to see everyone at the club in the new year. Please feel free to reach out to any member of your executive team if you have any questions. Take Care and See You Soon! Hamilton Hornets RFC

Rugby Canada and Provincial Member Union ‘Return to Play’ Update: The national Rugby ‘Return to Play’ guidelines were approved by the Rugby Canada Board of Dire...ctors earlier today and will be distributed to all Provincial Rugby Unions. In conjunction, the national suspension of sanctioned rugby activities has been lifted. The lifting of the suspension does not signify an automatic return to play across the country. Each Provincial Union will now incorporate the guidelines into their planning and apply to their local health authorities for approval for rugby to return in an appropriate and safe way. In early stages, this will involve modifications to regular training and/or games. The regulations and guidelines at the Provincial level will ultimately drive the timelines for when a return to play is possible. May 8th 2020. Hamilton Hornets RFC Statement Dear Members, ... On behalf of the Club Executive Committee we hope you are all staying safe, keeping healthy and maintaining good spirits in these most unusual circumstances. As you know, we ceased all rugby activities on March 13th in accordance with Rugby Canada, Rugby Ontario and Governmental Public Health directives. Since then, the suspension has been extended indefinitely and the City of Hamilton has closed its playing fields until at least May 25th. However, behind the scenes, contingency planning continues in the hope that we will salvage something of our 2020 season. How a reshuffled, shortened season would work, or what the impact would be on our clubhouse activities is still to be revealed, but planning and mitigation towards maintaining our club’s viability is being worked on. Our organization will continue to follow the directives and guidelines laid out by our union and government and as these change we will adapt to the new normal. All of our planned social activities have been cancelled or postponed and our AGM which according to our by-laws is to be held by June 25th 2020, is in jeopardy and will also be postponed. We plan to hold this a minimum of 30 days after the ‘lockdown’ guidance has been lifted, this will allow nominations for any of the open positions and to formalize voting, depending on whether a meeting can take place in person. Further information will be sent out as we know more. Finally, we would like to thank all of our extended Hornet family that are essential workers. Thank you for your courage and commitment to our communities, you are so amazing! Hamilton Hornets RFC
