Have you ever considered turning your love and compassion for our vulnerable elders into action by becoming a Care Aide in BC? Was the impossibility of taking time off work or taking on a student loan simply something that has prevented you from taking that step? The Government of BC announced a new program where you will get paid during your training to become a care aide! The program will take approximately a year to complete, but at the end you will be a registered and fu...lly trained care aide that is able to work anywhere in BC. If you or anyone you know are even remotely interested, check out more about this incredible offer at the link below: https://www2.gov.bc.ca//economic-recov/work-in-health-care See more

As summer turns to fall, many of us are reminded of our youth, when September meant going back to classes and setting goals for the new school year. Even though our classroom days are mostly in the past, developing new ambitions every few months is a great idea. http://ow.ly/vgVX50Bfjnr

We have been so privileged and uplifted seeing joyful and emotional reunions during long-awaited visits! We are grateful for all the positive outcomes these personal connections bring with them. At the same time, each day we also see spikes in reported COVID-19 cases within our cities and must again remind everyone how vital it is to remain vigilant in physical distancing, hand hygiene, and keeping our social circles small. Please remember that potentially exposing ourselves to the virus can have an extreme impact on others that we connect with. Please take a moment to read the following memo and the included articles. As we continue through each phase of the pandemic we grow and learn from each other. We work together as a team to ensure we all remain safe. We want to reassure you that we continue our planning for Covid and practice simulations to make sure we are prepared in the event we do encounter an outbreak within our homes. Our team has worked hard making sure we have adequate PPE supplies, and team members trained on usage. We have connected with our health authorities and community support network as a secondary plan to obtain further PPE if it may be needed. Our goal is to ensure everyones safety, please remember we are prepared! Together we will get through this.

We all can agree with Dorothy that theres no place like home: most of us want to stay in our own homes for as long as possible. But when it comes to adapting a home to meet the specialized needs of the elderly or disabled, cost can be an obstacle. This is especially the case for those on fixed incomes, but also for those who provide support and care for an elderly or disabled family member. If youre planning to renovate a home to make it more suitable for an older person, you may be able to get government money to help ease the burden. http://ow.ly/C6ad50AkIHy

Libraries across Canada are feeling grateful for a temporary reduction in costs for e-books and audiobooks as demand for those materials soars during the pandemic. Sharon Day, chair of the Canadian Urban Library Council's e-content working group, says several publishers have slashed prices for libraries to access electronic materials, while others have offered access to titles that were previously off-limits.

Over the past weeks, we have heard regions begin to carefully open up, and we all eagerly anticipate some loosening of restrictions for our vulnerable elders over the coming weeks. Understandably however, those steps are being taken even more cautiously in Senior Living environments than elsewhere. Some sobering facts highlight the complexity and fears around what next phase opening looks like for environments like The Hamlets: - The vast majority of Covid-19 cases occurs i...n persons UNDER 65 years of age - The vast majority of deaths associated with Covid-19 occur in persons OVER 65 years of age The Hamlets is carefully monitoring directives for Senior Living homes from Health Authorities and our governments, and we are preparing for next steps. These will be communicated to you soon by your Hamlet Home, based on local permissions and guidelines for Senior Living. Be assured that we are taking extraordinary care to try and find a balance between each individuals right to do what they want as well as everyones right to feel safe in their home. Our success at taking cautious steps to opening up will DEPEND on everyone families, team members and residents, being hyper-diligent in maintaining best practices for prevention of virus spread in all circumstances, including physical distancing, hand hygiene, respecting face mask protocols, and keeping a tight social bubble. Even as you see neighbors start to get out there, families and team members must continue to avoid larger social gatherings, as well as others who take greater risks. Remember as restrictions get relaxed over the coming months, ONE SLIP UP leading to a declaration of an outbreak at a home will inevitably result in reverting back to the site being locked down from all visitation. This is truly a case of us having to work together 100% in order to keep progressing to a new normal in which physical health safety and mental wellness safety are given equal attention and priority. In closing, here are a couple of resources we feel could be helpful to some: information on how easily Coronavirus can spread in community, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvLFz1KSYMA and a valuable resource that was prepared by Alberta Health Services for coping at home -https://www.albertahealthservices.ca//if-ppih-covid-19-cop Lets bend the curve and not the rules.
