Excellent article on the numerous and varied benefits of musical study. In addition to the emotional and intellectual fulfilment which comes with being engaged in the most elevated of all the arts, study in early childhood results in enhanced verbal memory, improved spatial reasoning, and a physically larger brain. Mysteriously, study for only a few years can have benefits which persist for decades and moderate study in childhood helps to protect the brain from Alzheimer's and dementia in old age.
