Today, we are featuring the beginning of the nesting season with the nest from Delta 2. The first order of business for the eagles is to rebuild the nest to make it ready for their babies. New sticks are added for the rails and grasses are added to make a nice comfy nest cup for the young hatchlings. Friday, August 21, 2020 - Loki is in Alaska! As you may remember, she is one of this year's chicks from our Surrey Reserve nest - and through a series of events described earlier - was fitted with a tracker. She was near the border between BC and the southern tip of the Alaskan Panhandle when she checked in on August 12 - and then she went silent - until today! One of the pictures shows her journey - roughly 1100km/680mi - and the other shows Mitkof Island, where she was w...hen she uploaded data; it's been a little over a month since she started her travels. Her tracker is programmed to send data to Canadian cell towers - and there are some in and near the panhandle, but I suspect there aren't a lot of cell towers where she is - and most of those that are there may use US frequencies - so I'm not sure how often she'll check in while she's exploring Alaska. ~JudyB The link to her map is https://hancockwildlife.org/our-projec/beta-project-page// See more

August 19 2020 - We are having issues with our Hancock Wildlife Foundation forum - https://forum.hancockwildlife.org. Members who are logged in can post as usual - but those who are not logged in get an "incorrect password" message when they try to log in. It is a technical problem at our end. Loki, the fledgling eagle from our Surrey Reserve nest who has a tracking tag has been offline since July 31st - and we know there are a lot of areas in norther...n BC without many cell towers, but we still were a bit worried. She checked in today - and she's almost up the the Alaskan Panhandle, and is about 900km/500mi from her nest! The Other Coast: the hawk

Adults Sur and Res from the Surrey Reserve nest stopped coming to the nest in mid-July, and fledglings Thor and Loki were on their way to explore the world around July 19 - and we thought the nest would be empty for a month or two - but Sur and Res have made several brief visits. At first I thought this dawn visit by Sur was only by him - but watching in slow motion, I realized that Res had made a brief appearance. I think our fledglings have all left the nest area, and only a few adults are still around - so we have a month or so to get our cams cleaned and and do other necessary work near the nests. This is Shadow at our Delta 2 nest, courtesy of SueB; his nest got a new dome cover last year, but several other nests need work this year if we're going to see next year's eaglets half as well, and even there, there are things that should be replaced.
