Have you ever considered the daily life of a colt starter? Has a colt starter ever considered the daily life a colt starter? If you had to sell the career path ...as a high school guidance counselor what would you even say? Your chance of major injury or death is greater than combat, half your customers will argue that you make too much money, but you can’t get a loan for a pack of beer and you will be crippled in your mid thirties. So consider the skill of your colt starter. We see showmen, rodeo athletes winning big team ropings. All on broke horses. Consider the man or woman who rides 15 bad colts a day. In the cold, the wind and through the pain. Reach out to the colt starter you know. Thank them. They are not well www.horsepro.tv

Teaching our colts to learn how to learn. Why is this important and what are the benefits? When I get horses in of all ages to start under saddle I can without a doubt tell you which ones have been taught how to learn opposed to ones that have had little stimulation. The difference is that the stimulated colts have an easier transition to saddle work and further, while the others tend to struggle to accept the concepts and often become anxious or stressed either hindering th...eir ability to absorb the information or ultimately hindering their potential. An anxious, unsettled colt is difficult to work with but truthfully it limits their ability to transition through training levels without breaking down emotionally and sometimes physically. My end goal with all my training horses is to produce a reliable, accountable mount in all disciplines, meaning that every horse is expected to have a higher level of reliability to their job and is accountable to its negative reactions. So what does teaching a colt to learn how to learn look like? It means that prior to maturity there is so much we can expose them to and encourage positive reactions. From learning to lead respectfully and consider pressure, to standing for the farrier and comfortably tolerate being handled, to experiencing new visuals, sounds and objects and processing, reacting to and accepting these controllably. This accountability falls on the owner to set these colts up to be successful by continuing to stimulate their brain and showing them how to accept things until it’s time to go to the trainer. These colts are ready to learn and I can get to teaching them a discipline smoother and quicker. On the other side, a colt that hasn’t had the opportunity to learn prior to coming into my training program will take more time and patience to learn the basics and more often than not will not be as reliable or accountable. The example is in the horse. This is why you’ll often see a well rounded horse excelling at a younger age opposed to a mid aged horse struggling with the basics and physically indicating stresses on resistance muscles. At the end of the day we all want our horses to be successful, enjoyed and sound. We want them to feel success in ways of rewards. We want them to enjoy our company and their jobs. But most importantly we want them to carry through their time with a sound body and mind. A good trainer will compliment this, a healthy life and activity will compliment this but the horses first exposure to the life we designed for it comes from its owner and that speaks volumes to how successful that horse will be.
