Today a few of our lions were glad to be able to help out with the local Christmas food hamper campaign. This year has been difficult for our club as we love b...eing out in our community helping out, doing bbqs, pancake breakfasts etc so we were happy to be able to be out in our community again helping where we can. Hopefully one day soon we will be able to safely get back to doing what we love and supporting our community. As always, we are here if you need us! See more

The housing crisis in PEI is real, even if it isn’t impacting you. The stories are so hard to hear. We have to make a change.

This weekend I learned that Deacon House was closed on December 10. Deacon House was an emergency drop-in shelter located in Charlottetown for men who struggled with substance abuse. There have been rumours swirling around for months that Deacon House was going to close. On November 24 Minister Aylward was asked the status of Deacon House during Question Period. He answered There was a lot of rumours going around and misinformation previously, too, about Deacon House and it ...was closing. That was completely incorrect. I don’t know where it came from but Deacon House continues to operate. In less than three weeks it went from being misinformation and rumour to reality. Islanders who are homeless or housing insecure have limited access to emergency shelter spaces. There is one shelter for women in Charlottetown (Blooming House) and another in Lennox Island; for men there were two shelters in Charlottetown - Bedford MacDonald House and the former Deacon House. All of these shelters are only open overnight. During the day, there are supports and services available at the Outreach Centre at Smith Lodge. Every afternoon, staff there scramble to find their clients a bed for the night, navigating barrier after barrier. The men who previously stayed at Deacon House are now being referred to Smith Lodge, where nine beds have been opened up. This means we have not added any significant new capacity to help homeless and housing insecure people. We have simply moved them from one location to another. The confusion, uncertainty and secrecy surrounding this decision is making an already challenging problem even harder. I also released the following statement today with my calls to action for the government. Read it here: https://peigreencaucus.ca//statement-by-hannah-bell-on-go/
