Hauling coal in the Jasper, AB area circa 1910. Most likely coal for the railway. - source Glenbow Archives
Featured Photo This week's featured photo comes to us from Bruce Lebiecki from his trip on September 11, 2016 during his ride with the engineer experience. Did... you know we offer cab ride experiences during our regularly scheduled excursion trains? Find out more information at https://nnry.com/pages/cabride.php reservations are highly encouraged as there are only two spot available on each train! For those that don't meet the requirements of a cab ride or just want a quick peak, talk to our friendly engine crew after the locomotive couples up and and we will do our best to let you step into the cab for a quick look around. There a number of revealing photos of the CPR yards in Ottawa West on the site Old Time Trains, including this one from the late 1950s! The photos come from the... Bruce Chapman photo collection (not at LAC). Here is a link to the old time trains article: http://www.trainweb.org/oldtimet/photos/ottawa_west/one.htm LAC does have photos of this rail yard and the roundhouse in the Duncan Dufresne collection dating from 1918 to.the early 1950s but they are not yet digitized!
I was getting some bridge shots with the drone then I heard the train coming and Simon Apperloo, I instantly thought of you.
More tedious work at the 1913 CNoR Roundhouse! The Boiler Room exterior is getting a bit of TLC preparing for metal flashing installation around the edge of the lower roof deck of the Boiler Room.
Every step forward is a step in the right direction! :)
Feature Friday A 2-6-0 Mogul of the Canadian Northern Railway (either 107 or 108), stuck in the snow on Iron Range Hill sometime in late 1915 or early 1916. The...se photographs are the most iconic winter scenes taken on this line, which was built as the Port Arthur, Duluth and Western in 1893, but at the time was known as the CNoR-North Lake Branch. Iron Range Hill, located between Mileposts 59 and 60.5, was the steepest grade on the line at nearly 2 percent. It can be found southwest of Thunder Bay, ON between Sandstone Lake (known as Sand Lake at the time) and Iron Range Lake. Brakeman Jack Lalonde leans against the stack, while passenger J.T. Greer is the middle of the three men standing beside the boiler. Greer is headed to the station at North Lake (MP 71), from where he will proceed to his logging operation further west on the lake. Pictures courtesy of Mary Wilson. For more information on the locomotives and the location, please visit: https://padwrr.com/info/equipment/ https://padwrr.com/info/stations/iron-range-hill/
Make sure your sound is on!
Another great photo find of the 1913 CNoR Train station. The Train station was closed May 5, 1967, noted in Jock Bolter's CNR Agent Register. I purchased items Jock put into an auction a few years ago at the Hanna Roundup on the east side of Hanna. With these items was Jock's CNR Agent Register book! He indicated the date & that he was the last CNR Train Station Agent in Hanna. I also have his desk, chair, typewriter & many other items which will eventually end up on dis...play at the 1913 CNoR Roundhouse. Jock had also noted: "Moved to Marengo, SK May 1967 to Jul 1972. Hanna Service Rep July 1972 - 1982." Thank you Jock Bolter! https://archive.org/servic//hannarailroadstationfacingeast
Found this photo of the 1919/1921 section (both these dates have been seen for dates the addition was built onto the 1913 Canadian Northern Railway 10 locomotive service bay Roundhouse). Date is 2002. Photo credit Joan Lewans. Notice it is taller & a bit longer than the original. And, the doors are different than the 1913 section. https://archive.org/details/thehannaroundhousebw
Looking through the Internet & found this article I hadn't seen about the Hanna Roundhouse. Interesting! https://www.rcinet.ca//preserving-another-piece-of-canada/ All I did is type in Hanna Roundhouse Society & scanned through some of the responses. Although this article is from 2017, interesting to know more Hanna, AB history. Thank you!
And, it is about 11 am this morming! Love the effect of the bright sun on this special spot!
