With these temperatures we are glad that the cows are milked and the calves are fed and all heaters and waterers are checked. The will come up soon now. #sunnyalberta
Find out Friday episode # 53 (the day late version) All sizes of farms have their place in our food production system, and the term "factory farm" is both offen...sive and inaccurate. If you make a simple Google search, the first links that pop up are all aimed at using fear to make you question your food. One even compares, what they call factory farming, to "real" farming. As a farmer I know all sizes of farms have their place, and we do not need to fear. As dairy farms go, ours is tiny in relation to the Alberta average of about 150 cows, but no one would imply that big is bad in that regard. We all follow the same rules to provide safe, nutritious food. In fact, larger farms, and not just dairy farms, have many more rules to adhere to, and that should provide confidence for the consumer. While the housing may be different, and better in a lot of ways as it offers shelter from the elements that ultimately increases cow comfort, all farmers care for their animals. Almost all farms in Canada, and USA as well, are family farms, and not the faceless, evil corporation that some groups would have you think. So, my take home point is that larger farms can provide an economy of scale that ensures a safe, quality product that the consumer can enjoy at a economical price. Don't allow yourself to be swayed by those who throw around the inaccurate term "factory farm", in an attempt to malign today's agriculture. It is truly an offensive term. Here's a great article. https://www.agdaily.com//farm-babe-hey-natalie-portman-he/
The calf born on the left picture (Happy cow RevMeUp Alicia and daughter Happy Cow Indigo Ashlee) became a mother herself (right picture, Jotanni). #3generations #its a boy
Our dairy baby bull calves are getting new white earrings. (Instead of yellow). #proaction #traceability
Family is the fabric of a generationally-run farm. Because of that, Dana Kieffer makes sure that everyone has their fingerprints on the barn, especially the lit...tle ones. Experiences you share with those dear to you are a treasure that last a lifetime, and her kids will grow up on the farm with a lifetime rich in memories. See more
Wow look at this line. Genomics is a nice tool but where is this inbreeding going ..
IF A COW WAS A MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY If a Jersey cow was a member of your family she would be your feisty little aunt that calls everyone honey, plays with all ...the kids, hugs everyone at family dinners, and has been arrested 3 times for assault. If a brown swiss was a member of your family she would be your second cousin. She was in the navy, "never been married", and drives big rigs all over the country. A holstein was a member of your family she would be your mother. Beautiful, able to be on her feet all day, normally calm but will tare shit up if you touch her calf. Your Mamaw would be a shorthorn. Bless her hart shes been around for forever, not much count for anything anymore, but we love her and i guess we'll keep her around. That sexy blonde cousin you have dreams about. Shes a Guernsey, sweet, nice, curves in all the right places, turns heads everywhere she goes, but doesn't understand why You know that redhead stepchild from your uncle's second marriage. Shes an ayrshire jest plain weird. Shes always in trouble, doesn't fit in with anyone, doesn't like mamaws cornbread, everytime you see her she has a new tattoo or piercing. See more
