This is a story about asking for help. We’ve lived on our acreage for over 7 years. And my flower beds still look like this. Dirt, gravel, rocks, and chunks of cement. In the summer it looks like no one lives here because - plants stress me out. In fact, as soon as the bedding plants start hitting the shelves I get ANXIETY and then I feel like a failure. A predictable cycle that has kept me stuck.... For over 7 years. WHY HAVE I NOT ASKED FOR HELP?? Well, because I’m a grownass woman and I *SHOULD* be able to do plants. There’s no logical reason for me not doing this on my own. Everyone else does it, so why haven’t I? Can we all see where that reasoning has got me? Gravel and cement flower beds. That’s where. THIS YEAR I ASKED FOR HELP. This year the dirt and gravel will be NO MORE. A friend is designing some flower beds and helping me get my sh*t together. I’ve had this friend the entire time I’ve lived here - why have I not asked for help before?! See above. It starts with SHOULD. So who cares and what does this have to do with you? Well, this is for the grownass women who feel like they SHOULD know what to eat, or they know exactly what to eat but they’re just not doing it. This is for the women who have been held hostage by the SHOULD. If that should has been keeping you from asking for help - know that you’re not alone. That keeps so many women from reaching out to me. And even after they have asked for help, many times in my coaching calls with clients they will say something like, I’m X years old - how can I not have this nailed? Let yourself off the hook and ask for help in whatever area it is that you need help. Don’t wait 7 years!

We started dating January 1, 2000. Exchanged "I love you" February 14, 2000. Moved in together spring 2000. Bought our first house fall 2000. First fur baby January 2001.... Got engaged April 1, 2001. Married April 6, 200219 years. #whenyouknowyouknow We’d be lying if we said it’s been all rainbows and lollipops. But here we are, still supporting each other’s wild entrepreneurial dreams, nurturing each other’s free spirits and challenging each other on the daily. He’s my biggest cheerleader and always encourages me to take the leap. It seems no leap is too small in his eyes. And I love him for that. To many more years of supporting each other, challenging each other, embracing each other’s wacky ways AND loving each other on the other side of the not so good days.

We're led to believe that health is hard. We need THIS product. THIS drink. THIS diet. THIS workout regime. THIS detox. And then we'll be okay. Just a quick reminder today that health has nothing to do with all the fancy things!... Stick to the basics. Pick one. If we’re not doing the basics, no detox, pill, or quarterly cleanse is going to save us or undo anything else. Can't get food or fitness figured out? No problem. Because drinking water, getting sleep, and taking a break to do some deep breathing are super important too. So start with ONE of those, and build from there. Make sense?

It’s a judgey world out there. If you’re gonna have rice, someone will have an opinion about that. CARBS?? Not good for you! If you’re gonna have cauliflower rice, someone will have an opinion about that. You must be dieting if you’re eating veggies instead of rice, and that’s not good for you!... FOR REAL? I’m tired of the carb fear that is promoted everywhere in the diet world. And I’m also tired of the judgment when you choose extra veggies instead of carbs in the intuitive eating world. There’s a truth for every person that’s somewhere in the middle of the extremes that is going to be most supportive. I recommend focusing on your own plate, dropping the rules, doing experiments to find what feels good for you, and sticking with that. How often do you experience judgment about what you’re eating?

When I was 6 or 7 years old, my ballet teacher made fun of my hands in front of the class. Look at these big things. I’ve been self-conscious about the size of my hands ever since. When I was in Grade 11, a friend and I created a crazy diet for a biology project (where were the adults - nobody knows) and lost weight that we didn’t have to lose. People commented on my body and said I looked great. I spent the next couple decades dieting, always teetering on that fine lin...e between diet and eating disorder. When I was 32 and had recently adopted twin babies, I was stressed out of my mind and not sure if I was going to make it. I lost a lot of weight. And people said, You lost weight, you look great. I was not great, and it made me feel like I better lose more weight so that I could keep looking great. (But I didn’t - by that time I was on the journey of getting untangled from diet culture.) People comment on kids’ bodies. People comment on adults’ bodies. And people need to stop. I get it - when you say to a close friend who you know is not sick or stressed - You’ve lost weight, you look so good! you may have good intentions. But what they hear is something like - I didn’t look good before and I won’t be accepted if I don’t maintain this weight loss. We need to stop commenting on bodies. It’s a bad habit, it’s part of our automatic conversation starters in our culture, and it has to go. It’s harmful, even when it’s a compliment and it can result in years of self-consciousness and much more serious and damaging behaviours. Your first reaction may be to tell me my hands are great. That’s far from the point of my post so please go back and read if that’s what you were going to do!

WHAT WE KNOW: Women dream about having a personal chef. I wish I could be that for you, but - COVID. Okay that’s not true - I would never choose to do more cooking... We also know that women often drop the ball on making themselves a healthy lunch.... AND we know how much of a difference the right kind of lunch makes in how the rest of the day goes. Setting aside some time to prep your lunches might be tricky, and maybe you need some accountability on this one. So why not provide that accountability for each other and do this together? ENTER - TEAM MEAL PREP I tested this in December, and it was a huge hit. So, I’m doing it again! For $20+GST you will join me, Jackie, and the rest of the group as I take you all through cooking 3 meals in your own kitchen on Zoom. We'll cook together, we'll laugh, we may cry. But whatever happens, you'll end up with lunches for yourself for at least 2 weeks, completely cooked, and a bonus family-friendly meal - but you’re not required to share. January Team Meal Prep Details: Sunday, January 17th 1:30-3:30pm Menu: Lentil Soup, Slow Cooker Chicken Taco Soup (family friendly), Savoury Spaghetti Squash Casserole This menu is very budget friendly. You get: Recipes, grocery list, step by step instructions, support, and - probably some entertainment. I’m no professional chef, I just stumble through and get the job done, so show up with reasonable expectations :) The finished product will be 3 complete meals (you are not required to make them all - choose what you want). If you’d like your capable tweens or teens to join you in the kitchen, that’s just fine. Your responsibility: To get the groceries you need before Sunday, January 17th at 1:30. Want in?
