Lower Suction Denture Technique Coming Soon! I recently attended training at Fisher Dental Clinic in Mission, B.C. where we received instruction in the Lower Suction Denture Technique developed by Dr. Jiro Abe of Japan. The course was a fantastic learning experience and I am now a SEMCD Certified Clinician. In a few weeks I will begin offering this type of denture which produces greater suction, increased stability and better function for individuals struggling to successfully wear conventional lower dentures.

Question: I need to get a new partial made and I really dont like the feel of the metal clasping on my teeth. I cannot afford to get an implant and am wondering if there are any other options available to me? You may benefit from the fabrication of a hybrid partial denture where different materials are combined to create a unique partial for your situation. When designing a partial denture there are several factors to consider including the location of your missing teeth, ...number and placement of your remaining natural teeth and how high a smile line you have. Some patients also feel concerned about the additional stress that metal clasps can place on their teeth. While acrylic partials can be bulky, cast partials combine the thinness and strength of metal with the esthetic benefits of Valplast clasping, creating a lighter and more natural looking alternative. Valplast clasps are made of a unique nylon thermoplastic material that is very strong, flexible, and has a translucent quality that allows it to take on the colour of your surrounding tissues. I recommend you meet with your Denturist, share your concerns and see if your situation would be suited to a hybrid partial. Darren Hoffman, R.D.

Hypersensitive Gag Reflex Gagging, is a safety mechanism meant to prevent foreign materials from entering your throat area. While everyone has this reflex some people develop a hypersensitive gag reflex which makes taking impressions and wearing dentures challenging. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to address this issue. First, talk with your Denturist so they are aware of the situation, then begin at home by practicing breathing through your nose, holding the air ...in for a count of three and out for a count of three. Breathe deeply, and slowly, pushing out your diaphragm which promotes relaxation. If possible, have your impressions taken in an upright position with use of a fast setting impression material to shorten the process and prevent material from slipping down your throat. Consider other factors. If you find your gag reflex is worse in the morning be sure to schedule your impressions in the afternoon. If your sinuses feel plugged try taking a nasal decongestants about one hour before your appointment so you will be able to breathe through your nose. Finding ways to distract yourself is helpful. You could try visualizing a scene or event that you found relaxing and practice thinking about it before your appointment making it easier to recall. Consider bringing a stress ball and squeezing it while having impressions taken. If you have high dental anxiety and cannot get past the gag reflex, you might want to consider talking with your family doctor or dentist about oral sedation. Taking some relaxation medication about one hour before impressions has allowed some patients to go ahead with treatment successfully and learn to work past their fear in dental situations. If wearing the denture itself makes you gag remember that for a first time denture wearer your body has to become habituated to this new foreign structure in your mouth so give it some time. The area that usually bring the strongest gag reflex is the back of the upper palate. The challenge for your Denturist is to allow the denture to extend far enough back to create good suction and not so far back that it irritates the soft palate. One possible home technique is to practice brushing your tongue in the area your gag reflex just starts. Brush this area about ten times with a toothbrush and do this daily until you become desensitized and then move a little further back each day. Above all, communicate your concerns to your Denturist and remember that different approaches work for different people.

Getting Back to a Natural Smile Question: I have worn dentures for 10 years and have never really been happy with the way they look. I am about to get a new set made and am wondering how I can get back to a more natural looking smile? If you would like a more natural looking smile, you can assist your denturist by bringing in photographs of yourself which show the size and arrangement of your natural teeth. Keep in mind that there is a natural harmony between the shape of a ...persons face, the shape of their teeth and the contour of their lips. The denturist will need to ensure there is a balance between what you would like aesthetically and what you need to eat properly and can review this with you. Sometimes, for example, people want more lip support from a denture than is possible because your anatomy restricts how much can be altered. Also, denture patients differ in how they want the final product to look. While some patients want a completely natural looking smile there are others who want bright white, perfectly aligned teeth which can make it more obvious that they are wearing dentures. In addition, allowing your denturist the artistic freedom to put some individual character into the design of your teeth will help to produce a beautiful natural looking smile. See more

Why Have A Denture Exam? Your dentures are an important investment and you can help maintain their longevity by having regular examinations with your denturist. Over time changes in your overall health can result in changes to your gums and bones. During an examination your denturist will be checking to see that the fit and bite are correct, enabling you to properly chew your food. They will be examining your dentures for any issues that need to be addressed such as cracks, ...chips or loose teeth. They will also thoroughly examine your bone and tissues, screening for any abnormalities including precancerous and cancerous lesions where early detection can be critical to a positive treatment outcome. When you see your denturist it is important to report any changes in your medical or dental health, including any medications you are taking since they can affect both your oral health and dentures. Taking the time to get a denture exam is a small investment of your time, but is a big investment in your oral health and helps you keep a beautiful natural looking smile. See more
