Ah. Home..Sweet..Home!

Never take safety for granted. I now have first hand experience on why our safety should never be compromised around water. I was just helping out when I slipp...ed and fell overboard. Funny how water at 3 degrees doesn't feel cold when in you're in shock. When you're wearing oilskins and heavy fishing boots it's extremely difficult to swim and to make matters worse the water pressure sucks the boots and oilskins to your ankles and torso. It's absolutely frightening. I believe what saved me was having the presence of mind to take a breath before going under and raising my arms so the first mate could grab my wrist. There's a very good chance that if I was alone I would not be writing this now. Ok so I've learned the hard way and was lucky...."this time". From now on I'll wear a vest and perhaps my experience will be a warning to others who act as foolishly around water as I did. Oh and to all my friends out there I love you all. See more
