It's Wednesday; time for the Veterinary Word of the Week! DYSPNEA (disp-knee-ah)... Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath. Often a medical emergency, can be related to a variety of injuries and illnesses. If your pet seems to be labouring to breathe, please contact your veterinary team right away.

Be aware of holiday dangers! Tinsel, decorations, and lights can be choking or strangulation hazards, and small pieces can be sharp! Lit candles and roaring fires are cozy, but always be aware of where your pets are in relation to open flames and if you're unsure of how your pet will react, opt out of real fire.... Yummy things for us, chocolate, alcohol, turkey and gravy are things we love during the holidays, but many, many human treats are toxic or worse to your pet. Bones can get stuck, chocolate and alcohol are poisonous, and gravy can cause pancreatitis, to name a few. Doors opening frequently to let in friends and family (a lot less frequent this year!) is a great way for indoor pets to beat a hasty retreat outdoors. Be mindful of your indoor pets especially. Many beautiful plants we love looking at this time of year are toxic too. Go for a realistic fake! Frostbite is a very real danger! Be mindful of how long you spend outdoors with your pet enjoying the Timmins snow. We love our seeing clients and all our patients, but no one wants to spend the holidays at the veterinary clinic for an emergency. Play it safe and smart this year and avoid the trip in to visit.
