Harley House's Original Occupants Hugh Harley was born in Reading, England in 1847. He was 1 of 7 children and when their father died, their mother moved the family to Ontario, Canada. Mr. Harley worked at the David Maxwell Company, Massey Harris, and then for the Government of Canada. IOn April 19, 1870, he married Eleanor Rutledge in Wellington, Prince Edward, Ontario. The couple had 4 children and lived in Portage La Prairie until the move to the Swan Valley in 1899. Hugh Harley died in 1918 and was buried in the Birchwood Cemetery, Swan River.
