ME TODAY pastel by Harley Brown This is me about 40 years after the "middle of my life" ME. Yes, you can see a good natured individual looking back at you. You know when you're talking with people face to face, you naturally look into their eyes. Behind those eyes are billions of brain cels that have been tossed around for years, sometimes hidden with a cordial smile and a few genial words. Here I am with those cels settled for the moment. Feeling rather tranquil. Let's talk.... Self portraits are aesthetic and emotional journeys; when its happening, so many thoughts come through our minds. Using pastel, I laid in those eyes that have seen so much and that mouth that has said so much. Those ears, well....... Features I've witnessed day after day and decade after decade. At the same time, not really noticing age creeping...time can be deceiving. I age myself through my mind which means I'm 45. (Please forget my first sentence up there.) The lighting from two sides adds drama; ultra-extreme concentration with the values and shapes of those lights and shadows makes or breaks a work of art. After years, that particular concentration helps bring out the individuality of the artist. We all like individuality but we must first learn to "play the scales." ---Harley--- Harley Browns Eternal Truths For Every Artist is republished and available directly through the artist/author website here.... https://www.harleybrown.ca/ #harleybrownartist #selfportrait #howtodraw #sketchbook #artteacher #artstudent #pastelart

BEFORE ME- SELF PORTRAIT DONE 57 years ago- oil on canvas (1964) Harley Brown This can be indecipherable but it's the only way I can explain. This is me before my mid-life period when I began to transfer back to my real self. In other words what you see here is the beginning of a fifteen year bizarro world. Yes, it had some good and productive and pure loving times. It was also a tangle of attitudes and directions that would stifle a navigator. ... So you see here the determined self, about to take that journey, not sure where it might lead. Just that I was ready for the "experience of a lifetime." Once again, my "Confessions....." book details the insanity of it all. You dear reader, can see into this mug, a sincere and relatively naive individual ready to check what existence is all about. And he does find it. As you observe, this oil painting is stroke for stroke, the basic Harley face; straight with no garnish. None of the little bits of fussing from other times, here we get "impressionism" a la BEFORE ME. Yes, there were also my art college "abstracting" moments here. I'll add that I meant them as we humans mean what we do and when we do it. There is no put on.....there is actual life. I have that "abstract" part of me, (my inner Balinofski) but that would fill way too many pages. Life is so very complex and that's part of why I love life. Let me further explanation this portrait; There's "ME," the self-portrait you saw this past week. This is the "BEFORE ME" portrait. Then there's the "THE BEGINNING ME," which was the first part of my life. The two portraits you've seen here were each painted at the beginning of critical parts of my life. As has been said in many ways over the centuries, life is to be lived. Sounds simple, but sometimes takes a while to really understand. --Harley---
