On the weekend I shared about the benefits of a balanced Pitta dosha. I thought I would share a sneak peek at the #etsy poster I created. It is currently available for instant digital download (link below and in bio). Pitta dosha is stimulated through core rotations and this vinyasa style sequence twists the body with each pose. I run through this sequence 3-5 times on mornings when I sense high drive, but also high frustration. It helps direct my focus and get me going. Woke up and saw that is was #ashtanga yoga for @altonayoga and @wholeheartedsage 8 days of equanimity and immediately got dressed to practice. This has been the best class so far. Maybe because I love ashtanga yoga. Susie’s cues were right at the perfect moment as you’ll see here. She suggests relaxing my shoulders and I immediately do, just at the moment I notice they are tense. I will definitely watch this video again. Was looking back at the yoga photoshoot I did with Fionn. It is crazy to think he was that small and that still. He now runs around, striders on his bike and opens anything within his reach. Practicing yoga during and after his birth has made me a more patient mom. I love with pre and postnatal women. I am offering the MFC pre and postnatal certification Dec. 16 & 23. I used to think an acne breakout or a flash or irritability was a moment in time. But, now I see that it is in a deeper unbalanced #ayurvedic constitution. I am predominately vata (which means I think and react fast, but that I fatigue easily, get bored fast and cannot sleep well). But, as Ayurveda teaches, I am actually a bit of Pitta and Kapha too. Pitta is the motivator. It is made up of fire and water elements. It is the Pitta dosha which drives my entrepreneurial spirit.... It is what I think makes me a great personal trainer, long distance runner and devoted mom. Those with high Pitta "get things done". But, those with unbalanced Pitta can get too fired up and this can have significant health effects. Did you know I just created a yoga sequence to help balance Pitta dosha? Lately, my vata dosha has been very unbalanced. I have had many nights with insomnia. I normally fall asleep early and deeply, but then I will wake up several times in the night. This time of year can cause increases in vata as cold winter air dries us and environments. Do you suffer from insomnia? I am thinking of starting a yoga/meditation class to help treat vata dosha imbalances and improve sleep. DM if you are interested. "Tai chi and yoga reduces prenatal depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances". I have spent the last few months studying tai chi and qigong. I love how these mind-body practices compliment my yoga practice. Yesterday I came across this study that scientifically showed that these practices are excellent options to reduce prenatal depression, anxiety and stress. Taking time to be in the moment changes our brain waves and the deep breathing signals our parasympathetic nervous system reducing stress. I am so excited to be teaching this course again. Joseph Pilates, the founder of the Pilates method used these exercises to help him overcome rickets, asthma, and rheumatic fever. Many of these body-weight exercises took place in his bed which is where the original concept for the Pilates reformer was created. Pilates is now popular all over the world. Nearly 70% of all fitness clubs offer some form of Pilates or core training. It is evident that people are still discovering Pilates and it will continue to grow in popularity within the fitness realm. Pilates is mindful activity that strengthens the body from the inside out. I avoid sidewalk crack, ladders and black cats! What are your superstitions? This rhyme also reminds me that I am teaching the Pilates Instructor course next week and it is the perfect style of exercise to prevent a "broken back"!
I looked out my window at 10:45 am and saw my neighbours standing in their yard. Their Canada flag at half-mast as they prepared for their own personal rememberance day vigil. This year we could not gather at #legions or #park memorials And even though we could not go over to our neighbour's yard either because of the new level of restrictions we as a family stood by our window at 11 am for a minute of silence. A loving kindness meditation played through my mind as I sent forth love and compassion to all those who have fought for Canada. Thank you for your service.
