INTERESTING FIND IN THE ATTIC RENO: Edward Mitchell Bannister was a prominent African American artist of the 19th century born in 1826 in St. Andrews, NB, Cana...da. Mr. Bannister lost both his parents at a young age and was taken in by Mr. Harris Hatch in St. Andrews. The story we were told was that Bannister was known to practice landscape painting in his younger years anywhere he could and painted inside Harris Hatch’s home on the walls. The Hatch family commissioned the construction of both the Ross Museum and our home on Queen St. in the 1800’s Several times over the past 8 years, we received calls asking if our home was the house Mr. Bannister lived in his early years. Our home has been renovated over the years, and this past week we uncovered the closed-in chimneys in the attic and surprisingly found the plaster covering on one of the 4 chimneys had been painted to what appears as a landscape scene. Early practice painting of Bannister’s?? We are leaving it untouched until we hear back from a local historian with the Historic Trust. He left with photos and a piece of painted plaster. Very cool story either way and connection to history. Harris Hatch Suites, Andrew Ludwig,
