Hey, everyone! Sensei Chris here, hoping everyone is staying safe and trying to stay busy. All this hand washing has got me thinking....... We're supposed to wash our hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds. We can sing or hum a little tune or count to make sure we're washing long enough. If you're going to count, why not do it in Japanese? 1 ichi 2 nee 3 san 4 chi 5 go 6 roku (rook) 7 sichi 8 hachi 9 ku 10 Ju 11 Ju-ichi (10+1) 12 Ju-nee 13 Ju-san 14 Ju-chi 15 Ju-go 16 Ju-roku 17 Ju-sichi 18 Ju-hachi 19 Ju-ku 20 Nee-ju (210) You can even use the number system listed above to figure out what higher numbers would be in Japanese. For example, if 20 is "Nee-ju", which means "two tens", then "San-ju", which means "three tens" would be.....30. What would 40 be? How about 60? What about 55? Think about it...five tens plus five. What would 83 be? How about 37? Kids, how old are your parents in Japanese? If anyone says their parents are "Hyaku", it's 100 push ups for you! Most of you can count to 10 pretty well. Some can count to 20. If you're good at that, try counting BACKWARDS while washing your hands.... We're looking forward to resuming classes and reuniting with everyone once this event has passed...and it WILL pass. In the mean time, stay safe, listen carefully to instructions from your parents and from *credible* information sources and keep your mind and body active. OSS - Sensei Chris

Hi, and welcome to the month of April, I bet you didn’t see this coming. Our lives will be changed forever by this 1 event. How so is yet to be seen but I guarantee our 3rd rock from the sun we call home will be a different place when this is over. Our Kids are now CONFUSED! Our constant decree to get off the electronics or get away from the TV and go out and socialize have turned in to government-mandated stay at home orders. Now that many of us are at home with the kids, w...Continue reading

I know we are seeing some very challenging times right now but there is no reason that we cannot work within the system to keep ourselves sane. Harrow karate will remain closed for the next few weeks to comply with the recommendations put out from our local government. Like it or not we are all in this together and all have to do our part. I expect all my youth and adult students to put your Gi on and have your belt tied. For you parents that want to participate ( I stron...Continue reading

For our second virtual class this will be a train on your own class but let’s put on our GI or other attire and work on some KATA. For you parents that want to participate ( I strongly encourage you to) put on some comfortable clothes, you don’t mind sweating in. Find an open space In a room where you can move freely. Perform the opening ceremony on your own if you are able .after you are done follow these instructions. But first, we need to warm up 1) Jumping jacks fo...r 1 minute followed by mountain climbers for 30 seconds and then 10 burpees 2) For your 3rd minute, you will do 20 pushups a 20 leg raises 3) We are going to go back to jumping jacks I want you to do as many as you can in 2 minutes, pace yourself count to yourself. this is not a competition against anyone but yourself 4) feel free to grab another sip of water 5) Now that your blood is pumping and we have some oxygen coming in and out of your lungs at a rapid rate, it’s time to stretch those muscles. Try and remember all of the stretches that we do and see what ones you can remember. Do each stretch 3 times going further each time and holding the stretch for a minimum of 12 seconds. Another sip of water is fine 6) For Thursday’s class, we will be doing your katas. You need to do each kata that you know 3 times the first time in super slow motion. The slower the better. This is harder than you think it is 7) 2nd time at regular speed and for the 3rd time I want you to tense all the muscles in your body. While doing your kata slowly with muscles tense breathe in on the blocks and breathe out on the strikes. Remember if you have multiple strikes to spread the breath out through all of them. Again this is harder than it sounds, do your best, grab some water after each set of 3 8) For a cooldown, If you have a partner, practice basic self-defense with your partner, remember to KIA on the 3rd full speed attempt 9) Work hard and the rewards will be apparent when we return to classes I miss you all remember to contact me if you have any questions and let me know how you did Thanks, Sensei Stephan Seguin Cell 519-890-1691

Hi everyone! Sensei Chris here... I hope everybody is having a great March break! ... I'm sure the kids don't mind an extra couple weeks stacked onto the end. (Parents, I feel your pain) Here's an update on how the COVID-19 virus is affecting our club: The Harrow United Church has closed the building for the rest of the month. The plan is to resume classes on Monday, April 6th at our regular times. Sensei Stephan is enjoying a well earned vacation in Florida and is looking for an early flight back. He will be posting his thoughts and more official information here shortly.

Have you ever thought: I’m fat. I’m old. I’m not enough. I was young once. To all my friends from 40 years and up: Most of us are going through the next phase of our lives. We're at that age where we see wrinkles, gray hair, and extra pounds. We see the cute 25-year-olds and reminisce. But we were also 25, just as they will one day be our age. We aren't the "youth in their summer clothes" anymore. What they bring to the table with their youth and zest, we bring our wisd...om and experience. We have raised families, run households, paid the bills, dealt with diseases, sadness, and everything else life has assigned us. Some of us have lost those that were nearest and dearest to us. We are survivors. We are warriors in the quiet. We are humans, like a classic car or a fine wine. Even if our bodies aren't what they once were, they carry our souls, our courage, and our strength. We shall all enter this chapter of our lives with humility, grace, and pride over everything we have been through, and we should never feel bad about getting older. It's a privilege that is denied to so many. Friends, I challenge you to copy and proudly paste with your picture and age. See more
