For any forestry worker in BC’s Interior who has been impacted by a downturn in the sector, please know that the Job Placement Coordination Offices are open. While some things have changed due to COVID-19, there are still training and job opportunities available for workers. Please safely visit an office in person, apply online or call toll-free 1 844 778-2200. https://forestryworkersupport.gov.bc.ca/
I am devasted to hear about the passing of a good friend, Gordie Larkin. I met Gordie back in 1983 while at CLC Winter School. I learnt from his values of workers rights, health and safety and his all-around social activism. Today, workers lost a great advocate and I lost a friend. Sending my heartfelt condolences to the Larkin family.
Forty years ago today, Donald Davis, Gunther Couvreux, Yrjo Mitrunen and Brian Stevenson died while working at the Bentall Centre construction site in Vancouver. The deaths of these workers were a catalyst for an inquiry that led to safety improvements in the construction industry. The anniversary of the Bentall IV tragedy brings to mind everyone who have needlessly lost their lives while at work. My heartfelt thoughts go out to the friends and families of all whose time was... cut short by fatal incidents on the job. I am forever committed to improving workplace safety in BC, and prevention of these kinds of incidents spurs my work. No one should ever lose their life because of the work they do; even high-risk jobs can be made safe. Not doing so is unacceptable. Today, my thoughts are with those who have lost their lives at work.
Happy Holidays to all! As Minister of Labour, I’d like to thank everyone in British Columbia for doing your part, being adaptable and staying safe during this incredibly challenging year. Please spend the holidays safely with your households and enjoy!
