Did you know we offer our CSA bag all winter long? Yes it becomes root vegetable heavy, that that is what’s local and in season. We also like to add in non veggie items during these months to keep it fun and fresh. Fresh farm eggs when available, and grains or legumes or oats and tempeh. This was last week’s bag. Today is National Indigenous People's Day in Canada. It is a time for us to celebrate the cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples. Those of us at Harvest Community Foods would like to acknowledge that, in the city of Vancouver, we are working and creating on the traditional territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam Nations.

Right down the street from Harvest Community Foods, at the corner of Main and Union, was an incredible restaurant called Vie's Chicken and Steakhouse. Vie's place lit up Hogan's Alley every night from 5PM - 5AM from 1950 to 1976! Vie's was a favourite place for black entertainers, both local entertainers and those who were visiting Vancouver - they would all eat at Vie's because racism banned them from other places. Her food brought everyone into the restaurant - she w...elcomed everyone! She was known for her steaks cooked in cast-iron frying pans, oven-baked half-chickens and homemade biscuits. Vie only hired women to share the kitchen with her - we wish we could've joined Vie for a meal or spent time learning from her in the kitchen. Her granddaughter speaks about Vie's place in a clip on Youtube.com, "Black Strathcona: Vie's Chicken and Steaks." Link in bio See more

At Harvest Community Foods, we have long been aware of the important history of our neighbourhood: Hogan's Alley. Hogan's Alley was the heart of a vibrant Black community established in the early 1900s. The community was devastated by urban renewal and by the building of the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts in the 1970s. We are committed to learning and sharing more of the history of Hogans Alley, we are committed to being allies with the BIOPC community to help create... change. This is a long term commitment, an ongoing journey. We are teaming up with @burdockandco for an online community bake sale, organized by @bakersagainstracism. Order our dark chocolate sea salt cookies and apple hand pies $5 each. All proceeds will go to @hogans.alley and @ubcinnocenceproject. Please prep order so we don’t run out!
