VCA Canada team members recently completed the first intra-provincial trip in our new Patient Transport Unit. Team members provided critical monitoring while safely transporting a patient from Edmonton to Calgary for specialty treatment. As part of our commitment to provide the highest quality medicine, we're always exploring innovative ways to ensure our patients get the treatment they need. #VCAFamily
We can’t be sure, but we think that Toph had a fairly relaxed time in the clinic while hanging out with TA Emma. Toph is a 3 year old Scottish Fold and she was seeing Dr. Jen Robertson for a broken toe nail. She rocked her bandage and bedazzled all of us with her cute mug and sweet personality. Fun fact about Scottish Folds: they are born with straight ears and the ears fold at day 18-24 only if the kitten was born with the gene. If the ears remain straight then they are called a Scottish Shorthair!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Kim Role: CCS (client care specialist) Kim is our resident expert in canine behaviour and training. She is CPDT certified (Certified Professional Dog Trainer) and is an invaluable resource to us and our clients! You can often find us picking her brain on cases and recommendations to pass along to owners and for our own pets. ... Some of her favourite parts of her job are: working with a group of like-minded people who are all in it for the love of animals, being around the unconditional love of animals and providing love, food and enrichment to our majestic clinic cat, Bob. Bob’s got some tricks up her sleeve thanks to Kim teaching her (if you ever get Bob to deem you worthy of attention to show you). When she’s not manning the front of the clinic or sharing her knowledge of behaviour, you can find Kim pursuing her love of photography and exploring the mountains. Her faithful hiking companion is her awesome pup Penny (aka Pendaloo). Manning the fort at home when she’s hiking are her pleco fish Moby Dick and Pedro, usually a hamster somewhere and sometimes some foster cats. Fabulous fact and talent: her and Melissa (one of our other great CCS’s) do a mean impersonation of turkey sounds. Them working together and no clients in the building = gobbling sounds that everyone panics at until we realize it’s them.

On Thursday we had sweet Beatrice in for a dental surgery to treat a broken and infected canine tooth. Beatrice is almost 23 years old, making her one of our older patients in the practice and Dr. Tara Morris and RVT Krista carefully tended to her for the day. As you can see, it’s a pretty full dental corner! Whether the patient is 23 months or 23 years, we take their anesthesia and stay at the clinic very seriously. Some of the equipment that you can see surrounding Beatr...ice includes a dental x-ray unit, ventilator, a mobile circle and Bain anesthetic unit, Doppler and oscillometric blood pressure units, capnograph and SPO2 measurements, ECG, a forced air warming blanket, IV fluid pump, pain medication syringe pump and a high pressure drill and scaler dental unit. That is a lot of monitoring and technology that is going into your beloved pet during their time with us! As you can see on Beatrice’s x-ray, the root of her tooth had become badly infected and part of it had been eaten away. With careful extraction technique, the root came out intact and we confirmed that the entire root was gone by taking our post-extraction x-rays before stitching her back up. Beatrice recovered very well and was batting at people through her cage door and diving face first into food while she was monitored in our treatment area for the rest of the day.
Such a heartwarming story, we senior pets!
That moment when you look up half-way into your first haircut after Covid quarantine and just pray that your hairdresser knows what they’re doing. Thankfully for Bagel, our RVT Morgan knows exactly what she’s doing and gave him a serious glow up! He came for a neuter and left feeling pretty dapper with his new ‘do.
We are currently experiencing intermittent unavailable phone lines please continue to re try as calls are coming through. We are currently working with our provider to fix this issue and will post updates.

Starting November 12th 2020 our hospital is going back to a modified curbside system. Given the current public health situation and rising Covid cases in Alberta, we feel it is the only responsible way to proceed in order to protect our staff and clients as best as possible while continuing to be able to provide veterinary care for our patients. As of now our doors will remain open for purchasing pet food and medication. For any patients coming to the hospital, clients will bring their pet into the front reception area and hand off to support staff for a non contact examination.
