The rains came. And so did the Salmon. Most are Coho with the remainder being Chinook. Not all have been kept by the hatchery, so lots have gone up into the Tynehead Park. Also, not all are ready to spawn, so they will just be hanging out in the various deep pools in the upper part of the Serpentine River within the park. The return has slowed down this afternoon to just a trickle. Need more rain. So who can see the Salmon???

A few Salmon have come in with the last rains. This is a female Chinook who is not quite ready to donate her eggs so she is resting in our maturing tubs. Unfortunately, due to COVID, members of the public are unable to be on the hatchery grounds to watch the salmon run or be involved in egg takes this fall. But keep looking here and we will post as events unfold!

Coho Pond Project We are getting our Coho Rearing pond ready to be able to raise Coho fry to the smolt stage (salmon go to smolt stage just before heading to the Ocean and Coho fry stay in the river for one year before smolt it). The first step was done earlier with removal of old organic debris. STEP Two was cutting down all the blackberry bushes around the pon. Not a fun job.... It took eight volunteers nearly three hours to remove 180 kg of blackberry bush! Thanks to all and Metrovancouver parks for thieves assistance! Keep watching as we progress in this project. Not a small project! Guess what the next step might be

Our volunteers are also active in other areas of our community. Karen works with Adopt a Street and helps keep her community clean of garbage. That includes recycle bottles of sorts. Karen then matches the money she makes from the recycled bottles and donates the money to the hatchery to assist with the running of the Tynehead hatchery. Karen recently got her neighbours in the Bear Creek Glenn Mobile Home Park involved in donating their bottles to be used to support the Hatchery! So a BIG thank you to both Karen and her neighbours! All donations are so greatly appreciated. It takes at least $30,000 annually to maintain and raise our Salmon babies!
