An orchard is born. Trellis posts going in for an 80 tree intensive fruiting wall orchard. Surrounded by a 25 tree nut grove and another 20 standard fruit trees. We love installing new orchards!
Solara is leading a Regenerative Agriculture for the Home Garden workshop (virtually!) this Saturday through the Compost Ed Centre. Come discuss the latest buzz word in the agriculture world and what tangible practices we can take to build soil and grow good food while increasing habitat for birds and pollinators.
Apple diversity makes us happy. This is a sample of some of the apples we got our hands on this year, many from Salt Spring. Sadly, the apple festival was cancelled this year, but we did our own sleuthing to make up for it.
This weather has us in a bit of a nostalgic mood, so here’s a trip down memory lane. The early days of Hatchet & Seed (these photos are from 2013-2014). In those days we (Tayler and Solara) spent our time giving workshops, leading permabitz work parties, doing plant sales, working with community groups, and doing backyard edible landscape installs. Scale is really the only thing that’s changed other than our housing situation and the fact that we’re now also tired parents and... we have an awesome crew who keep the stoke alive. We love what we do and have so much gratitude to all the incredible folks who’ve supported us and worked with us and taught us so much over these years. 2020 has been our biggest year despite or maybe because of the pandemic. Local food and farm infrastructure has never felt more important! Onward to a fruitful end of the year and a happy, abundant 2021. See more
Two more days to nominate a 'Good Food Champion. Is there an individual or a project in your community that deserves some recognition? Do they strive to create positive change within our local food systems? Check out the upcoming Good Food Summit as well! https://www.goodfoodnetwork.info/2020-good-food-summit

We LOVE apple season, especially when its a bumper year like this one. Here's a great article about wild apples and this legend Gnarley Pippins.
