Havenloft Tree Nursery

Was doing some spring prep-work and ended up having to plant about 14 American chestnut seeds that just didn't want to wait for spring! Hopefully the rest of the batch are this vigorous and we may just have some extra to sell this fall!

I checked the logs today out of pure curiosity, just due to the rainy fall we've had. Didn't i find a log with mushrooms growing! Too bad the cold is here to stay, but it does mean they will be ready to go for spring!

These pictures show the importance of mulching around trees. The mulch insulates the ground and holds onto the snow! It also helps retain moisture, acts as a weed barrier and works as a great slow release fertilizer. Exciting news coming as well. We have procured several different types of genetically superior cold hardy commercial cultivars of both hazelnuts and Black walnuts. These will act as a mother orchard for future commercial nut production. They will also be able to cross pollinate with Havenlofts own PEI grafted cultivars! Exciting time to be in the agro-forestry field.

Getting spoiled with nice work weather.

The warm and wet late fall has been a boon to the shiitake mushroom logs! May even get a flush befor winter. Not bad considering they were inoculated in spring.
