Do you know someone who needs this reminder? You should probably tag them so they don't lose a stirrup when they're loping circles this year

Thank goodness for muscle memory, and for the coaches and horses who help us develop the CORRECT muscle memory! An Equitation Clinic would be nice right about now...

Hi friends, We hope you've been able to find some beauty in the holidays despite the challenges we are all facing. In accordance with the provincewide lockdown, we will be closed for all lessons until the lockdown is lifted. Once we know when we can start up again, we will absolutely be ready to jump right back in where we left off. A few things to note:... Boarders/Owners are permitted to visit their horses to provide essential services and ride. This must be done by appointment for contact tracing and to make sure we don't exceed the provincial guidelines for the number of people allowed on the grounds. Farrier services are considered essential so Jess will continue to provide services on request. Our online tack shop is open with barnside delivery. Our online membership experience, Momentum, will carry on as usual. You can sign up to be notified when the doors open on our website if you're not yet a member. Online lessons are available on our online tack shop as well and we've frozen the price on them at the introductory rate for you! Check them out at: www.hayescofellperformancehorses.ca --> Tack Shop --> Online Lessons For more details from Ontario Equestrian about lockdown measures pertaining to riding lessons: https://ontarioequestrian.ca/update-provincewide-lockdown/

Ok, Reiners and western riders, got a question for ya What does the term, "side pass", mean to you As in, if someone asked you to side pass, what would you do?... Don’t worry, there are no wrong answers! (Dressage peeps, I'm aware of the actual definitions, but in the western discipline, the term has a lot of different meanings and we use lateral work a little differently so I'm interested to hear what people think when they hear the term "side pass".) Thanks in advance!

What an excellent example of great horsemanship and a little inspiration for this gloomy Wednesday. Sarah Dawson exemplifies a lot of great horsemanship skills here. Her mind is calm and focussed while her body is working hard and her heart rate is up. Check out her hands and the independence of her hands from the rest of her body. Her hands only move when she is deliberately asking something of her horse, her releases are quick and she’s not using her reins for balanc...e even when her horse is doing some pretty athletic things underneath her. That kind of independence of the hands can only come from constant development of core strength, flexibility, coordination and balance. If the body isn’t balanced, the hands can’t be independent. So let’s get back to work on that independence! And good luck in the finals Dawson Performance Horses! http://equinepromotion.com/video/embed.php

Our buddy Nic has crossed the rainbow bridge after twenty odd years in service as an NRHA competitor and in his retirement, as our lesson horse. Nic was humanely euthanized suddenly after some combination of colic/choke/ruptured intestine. He was healthy and dancing away in the cross ties for a lesson just one day earlier. His favourite things were:... 1) Dancing in the cross ties and letting everyone know he was there 2) Challenging young riders to get forward motion 3) Changing leads with a flatter-than-flat topline I have always dreaded telling students, especially youth riders when their favourite horse has left us. His most frequent riders responded with, I’m so sorry for your loss, Lindsay. He was a good boy and I’m glad I got the opportunity to ride him. We are thankful for the compassionate care from Dr. Wayne Carroll and from Lindsey Burke who made sure he had some sweet grass and head scratches in his final moments. We are thankful for the clients who were here to see their horses go/for a cow practice who were very understanding when things got a bit hectic. We are thankful to the family who placed Nic with us in his retirement from the NRHA show pen (he retired as Champion of the MRHA Short Stirrup!). Finally, we are thankful for Nic and his service to us. It takes a very special horse to be an excellent lesson horse. He was a good boy and we will miss him. Rest easy, buddy.
