Turn your vacation into a Hay-Cation this summer and hunt for fossils. Did you know that over 400 million years ago Hay River and the surrounding area was once submerged beneath a shallow, brackish sea during the Devonian era? This primordial sea deposited layer upon layer of sediment capturing and fossilizing the teaming life during this time of Earth's history. The Hay River has eroded through these layers of sedimentary rock to reveal these fossilized treasures. Walking a...lmost anywhere around Great Slave Lake and the Hay River you are likely to find fossils. Below you will find some photos of fossilized remains of Stromatolite, a blue-green algae that created large beds on the sea. These photos were taken near Nipin Bay at the North end of Blanchet Island on the East Arm of Great Slave Lake. These amazing photos taken by Linda Carter show the large reefs of algae that were one of the simplest and earliest forms of life to flourish on the planet. These were the dominant form of life on the planet for 3 billion years of Earth's 4.5 billion year history. We have a small fossilized sample of the Stromatolite on display at the Hay River Visitor Information Centre (VIC). Make sure you visit the Devonian Fish Trackway, a series of impressions fossilized in the rock at the top of Alexandra Falls. These impressions were made by a very large lobe-finned fish (Sarcopterygian) 350 to 375 million years old! This trackway is evidence from a critical time in Earth's history; when the first land animals were beginning to emerge. This huge fish used its fins to walk out of the water and on land. This all occurred 100 million years before dinosaurs roamed the Earth! The Hay River Museum Society and Heritage Centre have a wonderful display of both the Stramatolite fossils and the Devoinian Fish Trackway. Thank you to Bruce Green for pulling together all of the display items and information. If you are planning a trip up to Hay River make sure you set some time aside to go fossil hunting, who knows you might find a key to understanding the past. Ask at the museum if there is a fossil walk and talk going on and learn from local amateur Paleontologists. http://hayrivermuseum.com/ https://www.facebook.com/Hay-River-Heritage-Centre-256081217862160/

Have you ever seen a sundog? The splendid refraction of light through ice crystals occur during cold winter day when the sun is near the horizon. These regularly occur in the Northwest Territories and are an attractive daytime light display. Thank you to Michele Stephens who captured this sundog in all of its glory this afternoon.

THE NWT NEEDS YOUR INPUT ON TOURISM! PLEASE FILL OUT! With unprecedented challenges facing NWT residents and the tourism industry, NWT Tourism has commenced important research that will inform destination marketing plans and help to optimize activities, timing and messaging that will support the rebuild and recovery of the NWT’s tourism industry, when the time is right. The research is being undertaken by Leger, a leading Canadian research and analytics firm, who will be gat...hering feedback from residents about tourism through telephone interviews and an online survey. The research will consist of three waves of outreach to residents. We are excited to launch the first wave which will take place for several weeks beginning October 1st. The research will help enhance understanding of NWT residents’ attitudes and perceptions towards tourism as they come through the experience of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Emerging Wisely plan. In addition, the research will gauge how receptive residents are to receiving visitors from different areas. Information and insights gathered will be used to support the industry and guide NWT Tourism’s marketing through the phases of response, recovery and return to resilience for the industry. We encourage NWT residents to participate in the research and share your feedback on tourism in the North. Please take the time to participate in the telephone survey if you are called. If we are not able to reach you by phone, an online version of the survey will be available for this first wave from October 12th to October 25th at: https://legerweb.com/NWTresidents2020 If you complete the survey by telephone for this first wave of research, please do not also fill in the online survey for this same wave.
