Hi friends, I want to share something personal. I am hearing impaired. When I was six years old, I was ejected from a car through the front windshield following a rollover accident caused by a drunk driver. I landed on the right side of my head, which resulted in a complete hearing loss on that side. I went the majority of my childhood and teenage years without hearing aids. I learned to read lips and refusedhearing aids partly out of a fear of being labeled 'weird', and ...because back in the day they were incredibly unattractive; I'll admit I was a tad too vain for my own good. It wasn't until my 20s that I started wearing hearing aids because I began to experience hearing loss in my 'good ear'. If you've ever seen one of those videos where a child receives hearing aids or a cochlear implant and hears the world for the first time, that's what it felt like. The world sounded amazingly noisy and beautiful (who knew an air conditioner hum sounded so lovely and LOUD!). Why am I telling you this? Because today is International Day of People with Disabilities and this year's theme is ‘Not all Disabilities are Visible’. The focus is on spreading awareness and understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent and a reminder of the importance of removing barriers for all people living with a disability, both visible and invisible. I'm sharing my story because for years I was one of the 66% of people with an invisible disabilitywho didn't seek professional help because of fear of being labeled 'other'. My disability does not define me. I contribute to my community, workplace, and city just like you do. Lets talk about the importance of having a GOAL and how to set a goal. Apologies in advance for the length of this post, but goals and goal setting is on my ( @marisolnarvaez ) mind today as I just finished of my goals. Having a goal focuses your days. We often move through workouts (life) without fully understanding why we are doing what we are doing, and what the objective is. As a result its hard to know what progress you are making; without a goal its hard... to prioritize. Life happens. Things unfold. Youre not on a path. The objective of a goal is to #stayonthepath Heres how I set my goal to complete a marathon, and the principals laid out below can help you set new goals for yourself too! pick something specific (e.g. I am going to run a marathon in the Scotiabank Marathon event) make sure you can measure your goal (e.g. I will complete my goal in under 4 hours) ensure your goal is feasible - if youve never run a race but are really excited to, then consider an approachable goal (e.g. 10km race) before a long-term goal (e.g. completing the marathon) set a date you plan on accomplishing the goal by (e.g. September 13, 2020) Take it one step further and announce it to the on IG, FB, text, off the roof tops, text everyone you know...you get the gist. Pick a goal that speaks to you and brings you joy. I personally dont love swimming for long distances, so I wont be setting swimming goals any time soon. and MOST importantly have a support team, people that drive you, motivate you and hold you accountable every step of the way. They are your tribe and they are worth their weight in gold. Find them and hold on tight! Set forth, set goals, build a tribe. We can't think of a better person to feature on this long-weekend Monday than our client, Eva! Eva has been participating in our outdoor fitness sessions this summer, and she's been rocking each session. Scroll to learn more about her journey. ? I am recently retired after working 36 years in IT in the oil and gas industry. I am really enjoying the freedom that retirement affords me to pursue my many other interests (reading, y...oga, hiking, walking, pickleball, art etc.). Unfortunately I am not able to pursue them all, but I try. ? I was never active in my school or working years. I am a late bloomer when it comes to being active. Now that I have tried it, I LOVE it! It makes me feel more alive. I want to continue being active so that I can be independent in my senior years. ? I am very grateful that Haysboro Fit offers outdoor classes during Covid. It allows me to exercise again safely after several months of inactivity (other than walking). Marisol does a great job in coaching. She gives several options for each exercise to gear it to your level and is always very encouraging. I also like the fact that Haysboro Fit is only a 15 minute drive for me, so very convenient. I now have no excuse to not exercise. We are so proud of the progress you've made, Eva. Keep up the great work
