An exciting new training opportunity in science communication is being offered to graduate students and post-docs! Dr. Jeff Dunn is offering a 12hr course on science communication specializing in writing. This is the first such offering at the University of Calgary and is designed to meet the need to improve communication skills for researchers. Each week is a different topic, and there are speakers and editors from many different science writing avenues like The Conversation... and Scientific American. Learn how to better write a lay abstract, write for any audience, and even create a blog! The course will start April 8 (Thursday) from 3-5pm and run every subsequent Thursday for 6 weeks (until May 13). It will run online though zoom and D2L. Attendance and one assessment will be credited towards the UCalgary Badge system that will provide you with a way to recognize skills gained through this course. This badge can be put onto your CV and acts as a microcredential. There is no cost. Take a look at the badge website and the GSE website for information: https://badges.ucalgary.ca/badges/177 https://cumming.ucalgary.ca//current-stud/proskills/badges If you would like to register (or have questions), and your schedule is free for those dates (attendance is important), please email for registration.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has a few Teaching Assistant positions this coming Winter term that need filling, particularly demonstrating labs (online) for Electricity and Magnetism (PHYS 223 and 259). These are first-year courses for Science and Engineering students, respectively, mostly covering Electricity and Magnetism, though the last 1/3 of the PHYS 223 course covers Thermodynamics. Anyone with an undergrad degree in Physics or a closely related field would b...e suitable. The labs are all online, so there would be no assumption of students working in-person. If you are interested, please let me (David Feder, [email protected]) know as soon as possible, and also indicate the times during the week that you are unavailable, as well as the number of lab slots you would be interested in. Positions are subject to approval by your supervisor and your Department.

Researchers at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute are using cutting-edge technology, such as EEG and the Kinarm robot, to study autism in children. Svenja Espenhahn, from the Bray lab, and Ishita Moghe, from the Murias lab, presented their recent findings on differences in tactile and motor processing in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at the Owerko Neurodevelopmental Research Rounds on December 2nd. Of their key findings, they determined that 57% of children with auti...sm have probable or definite tactile processing differences. Interestingly, they found later tactile processing is faster in children with ASD, likely attributed to a difference in neural circuitry between neurotypical children and children with autism. Using Kinarm virtual reality procedures, the researchers also determined significant differences in sensorimotor abilities and proprioception between the same groups. In the future, they hope to expand the scope of the Kinarm project by recruiting children with diverse neurodevelopmental disorders.
