4,456 new cases today. We still don’t have paid sick leave. We still don’t have safe class sizes. Ontario could be doing so much better.

Enough is enough. Ontario’s workers need security and support. Our case numbers are catastrophically high, our ICUs are bursting. Paid sick days will give us the ability to not spread illness through the public when we have to choose between paying our bills and staying home sick. #PaidSickDays

Doug Ford’s total inability to secure classrooms has resulted in more closures. He abandoned teachers & education workers, leaving them out of the vaccine rollout, and creating more chaos for students. This failure of leadership is inexcusable.

This is the level of integrity, commitment to public duty, and attention to detail the Ford government exemplifies. Turns out Finance Minister Phillips was both out of the country on vacation (flying in the face of his government’s restrictions) AND in Ajax, Ontario at the exact same time.

For-profit Long Term Care leads to prioritizing profits over people. Seniors’ care, much like healthcare, education, and public safety cannot be compromised for investment dividends. Our government not only condones this behaviour of profits for corner-cutting on the wellness of seniors, they are actively encouraging it by enacting legal protections for companies that do so. Ten days ago, in Hamilton, came a stark reminder of the state of Ontario’s long term care homes, as Grace Villa’s staff union publicly called for military aid to help their out-of-control outbreak. It harkens back to the spring of 2020, when armed forces were brought in to many LTC homes, resulting in a scathing and embarrassing report on the state of care for our vulnerable seniors. That report focused a spotlight on this government’s choices to all but eliminate inspection...s, as well as inadequate staff training and PPE supplies. In the months since, virtually nothing was changed, save measures to shield private long term care owners - like former Premier Mike Harris - from repercussions of their failures. Bill 218, passed in late November, is a carefully crafted legislation designed to protect Conservative donors and party insiders at the cost of public safety and accountability. 70% of Ontario’s covid19 deaths have been in long term care. Private institutions have double the mortality rate of publicly-funded care. Covid19 is not news. This has been a situation ongoing for 8 months, now. And for those 8 months, experts have known that, come autumn, this novel virus would overlap with flu season. Premier Ford himself spoke several months ago about the urgent need for increased flu vaccinations this year. And yet, here we are. Barely 5 million doses for over 14 million people. Pharmacies overwhelmed, unable to fill the demand Ford created. Vulnerable people left waiting weeks to ge...t a vaccine deemed so necessary. And who’s to blame?
