Headingley Grand Trunk Trail 25.11.2020

We have installed a bicycle repair station on the trail. It is located just west of the kiosk at Wescana St. Thanks to Rackworks and the Gompf family for the installation. We would also like to extend our appreciation for the donation from Global Drain Technologies that made this possible.

Out to see the sunset this evening. Not the best sunset this evening but we never have a bad one on the trail. Here approaching Breezy Bend from the east. Photo - Les McCann

There were not many people on the trail this cold and cloudy Sunday. However, there have been record numbers of folks using the trail in recent months. It is wonderful to see. Please remember to be safe and follow the social distancing guidelines set by the province. Happy trails!

It has been wonderful to see so many people on the trail these days. As I was walking this week, there were people biking, hiking (all the way from Assiniboine Forest), running, walking, flying kites, and sitting on benches taking in the spring air. In order to ensure the safety of all these trail users, please remember that the trail and green space on either side including the dirt mounds between Alboro St.and Wescana St., are non-motorized vehicle areas. New signs have been posted to remind everyone.

So many signs of spring on the trail today. Frogs, pussy willows, red winged blackbirds, geese and the unexpected sighting of a great blue heron in the marsh. Great to have a little hiker joining me. Lots of puddles to wade through!

Spring seems to have finally come! Enjoy our trails, but remember to keep the 2m distance between you and other trail users so we all stay healthy.

Forwarded from Bike Winnipeg... We are concerned that the concerns of people who walk or bike have for the most part been left out of plans to widen and reconstruct the South Perimeter Highway to a freeway standard. This is despite the project goals including s all roadway, railway, active transportation, and water course crossings and connections. Our Chief Concerns Contrary to the City of Winnipeg’s Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies, the plan to connect the Harte Trail to... the Grand Trunk Trail is provided via a 2 km long detour to Wilkes Ave and back. We feel that the lack of a direct connection will create a considerable safety hazard. Contrary to the City of Winnipeg’s Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies, there are no plans to improve the pedestrian/bicycle crossing of the Assiniboine River and connect it to the city’s Proposed Cycling Network. The Walk/Bike Bridge called for in the Waverley West planning documents is not included in the plans to widen the Perimeter Highway. An alignment will be determined, but no bridge will be built. This walk/bike bridge would connect the Beyond the detour pathway replacing the planned Harte Trail/Grand Trunk Trail walk/bike bridge, the South Perimeter Highway project does not include construction of any walk/bike pathways within the Perimeter Highway right of way. This is in contrast to service roads, which are included in the plan. Please review the project boards at (https://www.gov.mb.ca/mit/hpd/pth100/studies.html) and try to attend one of the upcoming open houses or fill in the online survey (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PTH100). The Headingley Grand Trunk Trail Association has been working hard to protect and restore a section of remnant prairie that runs along the south side of the trail between the railroad tracks and Rodney St. It was frustrating to find that dirt bikers have dug large holes in the prairie to create jumps and are riding their bikes through the prairie. The trail is well posted with "No Motorized Vehicles Allowed" signs. Please help spread the word that this is a protected area.
