Congrats to all our players who took part in the junior tourney this weekend at ATC. Some big wins and tough losses as goes most events. We are so lucky to be, we think, the only part of the country currently having tournaments.

Where should we start? Perhaps you’re a young tennis coach working with beginners (or even developing juniors). Where should you start? What does the first pra...ctice look like? And what about the first drill? Many think - because tennis can be ‘technique’ intensive - that that’s where we should start. Let’s get the basket out and start hitting balls, analyzing every movement, and every motion AND AFTER EVERY SHOT. From my experiences, that doesn’t work very well. Even if you have a player that ‘catches on’ quickly, you’re left with someone who can only hit the ball in the most perfect of conditions (no movement, no randomness, no opponent)good luck! But tennis is chaotic, random, unpredictable (and these days, really fast) - and most tennis practices aren’t setting players up to face these challenges. Remember, tennis is a perceptually driven sport. Players are constantly reacting to the oncoming ball - even if you’re hitting crosscourt forehands, no 2 balls will be identical. There will always be a decision that has to be made in terms of where we move, how we position ourselves to the ball, what kind of shot we want to hit etcand then there’s the whole ‘execution’ piece. This concept is called ‘Perception-Action Coupling’ - it’s the link between what we see AND what we dovisual processing meets movement. That’s where I would startmore to come #mattspointtennis #beyondtheswing

Hey all tennis players! Hope you are all enjoying our opportunity to get out and play! Hopefully we will continue to have loosened restrictions and be able to g...et even more back to a new normal. Likely, many of you have all seen the information coming from Tennis Nova Scotia about the upcoming meeting regarding the proposed new by-laws. There are some portions of them that I personally do not support. If you want to discuss why, feel free to contact me. More importantly, I encourage you all to participate in the meeting. Please take the time to read the current and proposed by laws on the Tennis Nova Scotia website. If you do not fully understand them please ask for clarification from TNS or others around you who may understand. Whether you support them or not, please register for the meeting through contacting Tennis Nova Scotia (June 11 deadline). Your voices and opinions are important! Only members of TNS can participate and have a vote. You are a member if you have joined Tennis Nova Scotia specifically or if you are a member of a member club. This includes all members of The Waegwoltic, St. Georges, Headstart Tennis Centre, Truro Tennis Club, Cougar Dome, Atlantic Tennis Centre, Cromarty and any other member club. The actual meeting takes place online via Webex on June 18th at 7pm. Come help TNS chart a path forward to a bright tennis future in our province that includes us all. Hope to see you there!

Dear Headstart Members and Students, These past weeks have been like nothing we have experienced in our lifetimes. To date we have made it a priority to follow provincial guidelines regarding cleanliness and social distancing at our facility. We have been monitoring the situation, on a daily basis, and we have been debating our best path forward in this medical crisis. It is no easy decision, in the short term , based on our judgement of what is best practice for the safety o...f our members, their families and our families Headstart Tennis Centre and Headstart Tennis Academy will take a brief pause in operations effective immediately . We are targeting a potential re-open for play in three weeks time on April 6. We will be continuing to update online and by email if there are any changes to this timeline. Due to the evolving nature of this situation, we will process any credit for missed membership time or cancelled lessons when there is greater certainty. We appreciate your understating in these uncertain times. Sincerely, Headstart Tennis

The COVID 19 global pandemic needs no back story. Headstart fully expects that the virus will be confirmed in Nova Scotia over the next 2 weeks with so many people traveling internationally. We are taking the following precautions at Headstart to help prevent the spread of the virus. We are disinfecting all frequently touched surfaces in the club multiple times per day.... We encourage members and students not to touch others unless necessary. Please refrain from touching your face when playing as we are unsure as to the potential for the virus to survive on a tennis ball. At any point, if the schools close to prevent the virus spread, we will also shut down all of our group tennis lessons until it is deemed safe to restart them. Private tennis lessons and Member bookings will hopefully not be impacted, however we will act in accordance with local government health recommendations. Please follow all government health department guidelines and directives especially around frequent hand washing. Late cancellation policy will not apply to anyone canceling due to sickness for the remainder of the season. Please continue to enjoy your tennis season and stay healthy!
