As yet another lockdown commences... We ask WHY our government is not following the laws?! Why are personal service settings, gyms, and restaurants the only industries yet again mandated closed?!... There is a year of evidence to support that the personal service setting is a very safe place. The emergency measures act specifically states that they must provide clear evidence we are causing a significant risk to public health in order to close us. That they must put in the place the measures that will create the most minimal impact to citizens. That they must follow the charter of rights and freedoms. The female job market now sits where it did back in 1988. We care about our community. We want to serve you in our very safe environment. #beautyunitedcanada #liftthelockdown

As most of you are now aware, Doug Ford released yesterday that Hair Salon’s can reopen this Friday. We have had a huge outpouring of inquriries from all of you and we are very thankful for all of your continued business. Please understand this is very overwhelming, with a lot of work to be done in preparation of reopening.... We have not received our guidance’s from all of our government bodies as of yet; we will need this before moving forward. We are not booking appointments as of yet. We need time to implement new procedures, ensuring our staff and customers have a full understanding of practises. We will post more as we know more. When Viola Desmond applied to every local beautician school and was turned down due to her race without exception, it only made her more determined to reach her goals. In 1936, she left NS for Montreal to enroll in The Field Beauty Culture School, one of the only Canadian cosmetology schools accepting Black Women at the time. She would finish her certification, transferring to schools in New York and Atlantic City before returning to Halifax and opening Vi’s Studio of Beauty ...Culture on Gottingen St. in 1937. She found so much success caring for the beauty needs of the Black community in Halifax that the business sparked her own beauty line catering to the needs of her clientelle. Remembering her own struggle, she opened the Desmond School of Beauty culture. The VERY FIRST beauty school in Atlantic Canada to provide training to Black Women and teach proper techniques for Black hair care. This opened up so many opportunities for entrepreneurship for Black Canadian Women and reclaimed many salons as a celebratory space for the Black community and the cultural significance of Black hair. Her school saw as many as 15 graduates at a time, and women travelled from as far as Quebec and New Brunswick to be taught by her. We all mainly know her for her bravery and unjust arrest at the Roseland theatre in 1946. This woman was a leader and complete boss her ENTIRE LIFE. She had to completely close her beauty businesses and LEAVE CANADA because her clients no longer felt safe being around her. Because they truly were not safe. The stress ended her marriage and her business partnership. So little is known about her life after Canada, only that she attended business school. Her charges were only granted posthumous pardon in 2010. And we STILL find ways to downplay her accomplishments or worse, use them to soothe white guilt and claim her accomplishments as ours as in Nova Scotian’s. She’s a Nova Scotian inspiration and leader, yes, but make no mistake, this province did nothing to help her. #beautician #hairstylist #blacklivesmatter #inspirationalwoman
