Wishing all of our Headwater Hills families a wonderful Easter weekend.
Some of our 3 year old students enjoying letter sounds and matching lessons.
Spring!! Middle schoolers welcomed spring by tapping trees and making maple taffy over a fire. Last week, Jamie of Am Braigh Farm taught students how to start seeds on our light table. We look forward to heading to the farm to transplant them when the weather is warm enough.
After we dried off and warmed up from Forest Friday in the rain, our youngest group worked with tools, investigated the catapult, and explored colours.
Forest Friday in the rain is the best! Sink/float, damming streams, water flow, gravity, slope, filling, pouring, .... So much investigation! So much exploration! So much learning!
Please help our school by signing this petition!! Our school is one of many child service providers that will now be taxed municipally at the same rate as commercial enterprises. Child services are completely different in nature from a Tim Hortons, Walmart or other such commercial establishment. Children are NOT commodities and child service providers do NOT operate under the same principle that every square foot must generate a certain volume of sales/profit. Children need r...oom to roam! Children need playgrounds and land and forests! By taxing as a commercial establishment based on land value and square footage of land, the government is exerting dangerous negative pressure on child service providers to minimize indoor space per child, to shrink playgrounds, and to not locate children's programs in naturalized areas; the effect will be to compromise the viability of many child service providers and especially already established forest schools with a large naturalized land base like our own. Child and youth services are already very vulnerable and need protection. It is the Ontario government that sets the municipal tax structure. Please help by signing our petition! Please also send an email to your MPP. In Dufferin-Caledon this is MPP Sylvia Jones: email [email protected] telephone: 519-941-7751 Ask Sylvia to support a change in tax structure for child and youth services, one that puts child and youth service providers in a different category than a McDonalds or Walmart, and one that doesn't exert a punitive influence against children's need for nature and room to roam. YES to taxes, NO to inequitable, regressive taxes! We appreciate your help!!
Well... The windstorm knocked out our tent, but Casa was there to help tidy up. Great team work! But don't worry too much; this tent needed to come down so the new, and better version can be put up.
3 wooden beams + 4 bamboo poles = Balancing. Sliding. Levers. Carrying. Construction. Critical thinking. Teamwork. Sharing. Engineering. Risk assessment. Collaboration. Trial and error. Physics. Helping. Empathy. Imagination. Leadership. Vocabulary. It was amazing watching our Casa students (3-6 years old) discover the beams and poles and begin to work with them. Several students carried beams to create a wall for the shelter they were building together. One boy helped use a large rock to determine the stability of his beam ramp. A 5 year old held the hand of a nervous 3 year old trying to walk along a tilted beam. A group determined how to best take turns on their newly built bamboo slide.
Our youngest class (3-6 years) were very busy with their work this week.
Yesterday, our school was the featured member of the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators. I encourage you to take a look at our website, including a lovely video of what we do here at Headwater Hills Montessori School. https://www.headwaterhills.org

In case you are interested, here is the recipe that Casa uses for our famous roasted pumpkin seeds: Remove seeds from pulp and wash. Boil seeds in salted water for 10 minutes. ( For every 1/2 cup of seeds, use 2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon of salt) Drain seeds thoroughly. Coat seeds with a bit of cooking oil. ... Spread seeds on baking sheet. Roast at 400* F on the top rack for 5-20 minutes. Time varies depending upon the size and thickness of your seeds. Taste for done-ness when seeds begin to turn golden. Let cool and enjoy! See more
