Edmonton's mandatory mask law is now in effect. Here's what you need to know Author of the article: Dustin Cook Publishing date: Jul 31, 2020 Last Updated 27 days ago 2 minute read... Masks will be mandatory inside publicly-accessible spaces in Edmonton starting Saturday. PHOTO BY DAVID BLOOM /Postmedia Article Sidebar Share TRENDING Alberta's police watchdog investigating after man dies following RCMP shooting Masks must be worn in all indoor public spaces in Edmonton as of August 1 in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Here is a breakdown of what you need to know about the rule. What is the law? Edmonton city councillors passed a bylaw on July 29, by a vote of 10-3, to mandate masks inside publicly-accessible spaces until the end of the year. This includes city property, the transit system and city-operated buildings, as well as private buildings accessed by the public and vehicle-for-hire services. Anyone entering stores, entertainment venues, restaurants, malls and recreation centres needs to wear a mask. In order to meet the needs of all residents, a traditional mask isn’t the only option. The city’s rule requires the wearing of a face covering that fully covers the nose, mouth and chin. This could include bandanas, scarves, cloth, and non-medical masks, but not face shields. When does the rule not apply? Buildings under provincial jurisdiction, including schools, hospitals and child care facilities, currently don’t fall under the rule. City council has the ability to include these spaces in the bylaw, but has chosen not to take that step yet. Council will reconvene in mid-August and will discuss whether to add these facilities to the rule. Areas exclusively accessed by employees that are blocked off from the public by a barrier, such as a bus operator shield, are also exempt. Other exemptions to the mask mandate are: -children under the age of two -people with underlying medical conditions or disabilities that prevent them from safely wearing a face covering or putting on and removing without assistance -individuals providing care to someone with a disability in situations where wearing a mask would hinder their assistance -when consuming food or drink in a designated seating area, such as a restaurant, or as part of a religious ceremony -during physical exercise or water activity -if a service requires temporary removal of a mask, such as dental work or a passport photo -Proof of being eligible for an exemption is not required.
