Well personal tax season is upon us. Are you ready to file? Healey Bookkeeping will be moving to a temporary location (my incredible in-laws next door!) as we renovate. Please call, message the page, or email before dropping off your returns. Otherwise, you might be handed a hammer and put to work!

March 2, 2020 is the deadline for RRSP contributions towards the 2019 tax year. Have you thought about your personal return? Now's the time for tax planning!

Important Dates - I know most people are aware that your personal tax returns are due April 30th of the following year, but here's a couple other dates to keep in mind if you're self employed, registered for GST/HST, or are an incorporated business owner: Self-employed - Personal taxes aren't due until June 15th BUT remember if you owe income tax, interest begins accruing as of April 30th Income tax instalments - 15th of March, June, September and December... GST/HST - individuals who file annually with a Dec. 31st year end - Filing deadline is June 15th, but payment due April 30th. GST/HST - individuals who file annually with a non-calendar year end - Filing and payment due within 3 months of the end of the period Corporate Income Tax - For CCPCs claiming the small business deduction - Corporate return is due within 6 months of year end, BUT if there is tax owing, payment is required within 3 months of year end GST/HST - If you file monthly or quarterly, you return and payment are due one month after the end of the period All that being said, if you owe, DON'T FILE LATE. Interest and penalties work out to about $8 million/day for each dollar you owe. Ok, maybe that's a little exaggeration, but it adds up quick.

As everyone is starting to plan ahead to tax season, I wanted to get a head start on my annual "tax tips". As you sort your receipts, if ever you have any questions, please feel free to message the page or send me an email. Guaranteed, someone else is wondering too! Did you know - Premiums paid to a Private Health Service Plan may be an eligible medical expense? I often hear, "I have benefits, my medical expenses aren't worthwhile to deduct". But if you're having amounts deducted from each pay to cover the premiums, it can add up. Now on flipside... if you're employer is paying your premiums you lucky bum, no, you cannot deduct them!
