Arthritis can affect dogs of any size, any breed and almost any age.... but some dogs may be more prone than others. One risk factor for arthritis is abnormall...y developed joints. Elbow dysplasia is a condition comprised of several possible abnormalities in the way the elbow joint fits together. The British Veterinary Association - BVA, who have a health scheme to combat this condition in prone breeds have explained more: "Elbow dysplasia can have serious effects on the health, behaviour and welfare of dogs. The scheme uses X-rays to screen for signs of abnormalities caused by the condition. X-rays are reviewed and scored by BVA-appointed expert veterinary surgeons. The results can then be used to help breeders make sure they only breed from health dogs. Elbow dysplasia is an inherited condition that affects the elbow joint. It can be very painful and can have serious effects on a dog’s health and welfare. Common breeds at risk include Rottweilers, Bernese Mountain Dogs and Irish Water Spaniels. Many other breeds are also at risk including crossbreeds. If you’re looking to buy a puppy that may be at risk of elbow dysplasia, it’s important that you see the parents’ health test results before you commit to buying. CHS recommends that breeders only breed from dogs that have a grade of 0. We know there is a lot to think about when buying a puppy - but make sure you think about this!! #CHSmonth #Caninehealth
