If we look deeper into the history of gynaecology, we see that not only has the feminine pelvis been named after the men who discovered them, but also that these men (who were all white anatomists) studied these female structures through experimentation on enslaved black women, in most cases without anaesthesia. . How did it all begin? . Medicine history credits J. Marion Sims, an American surgeon, as the Father of Modern Gynaecology. However, Sims conducted surgery on enslaved black women without anaesthesia between 1845 and 1849 at his improvised medicine clinic built on his garden, near the slavery plantations in Alabama. . These stories were recorded in his journal, where the physician shared that he practised up to 30 procedures on these women, without anaesthesia. These women´s lives were silenced, oppressed and brutally tortured. This man was then honoured for his contributions to modern medicine. From these atrocities Sims invented over 70 pioneering surgical tools and techniques related to women´s reproductive health, among them the vaginal speculum. Of course, no mention was made to any of the women who died during these experiments. . Betsey, Lucy and Anarcha are some of the known names of these enslaved black women that were kept in this hospital for 5 years, surgery after surgery. Anarcha, a 17-year-old enslaved woman went through over 30 operations without anaesthesia. Lucy was 18 when she endured a long surgery while a dozen doctors watched. .This injustice brings up a clear proposal: . Renaming the Skene Glands and Bartholine Glands in the memory of the victims of these experimentations: .Skene Glands (ejaculatory)-> Anarcha Glands.Bartholine Glands (lubricatory)-> Lucy and Betsey Glands .
