Finding the right diet for you has significant health benefits. I explain how to find your right diet in "You Can Be Well"
How many rational-lies do we tell ourselves about diet?
My favourite protein shake ingredients. That's almond milk for the dairy intolerant.Tip: Stay full longer by adding a healthy fat.
First post for my new blog.
Selenium deficient soil produces selenium deficient food. Red areas of this map show soils known to be deficient in selenium. Selenium is an important mineral needed for immune support and liver health.
This is one of several studies connecting nutrient deficiencies with outcomes from COVID infections. Results of this study "suggest that a deficiency of vitamin D or selenium may decrease the immune defenses against COVID-19 and cause progression to severe disease." Why should you be concerned? Vitamin D is often deficient among northern dwellers, especially in the winter when sun exposure is limited. Selenium deficiencies is common because much of our food is grown in selenium-deficient soil (see my next post)
Based on these findings, good "health insurance" will include taking Vitamin D supplements, particularly if as we go into fall/winter, where in Canada our sun exposure is limited. The exact dosage of Vitamin D needed will depend on individual health status.
My friend Robert is giving helpful exercise tips for seniors. In this time of increased isolation, you can keep fit at home. Subscribe to his Youtube channel now!
There is other research, besides development of vaccines, that could help with responding to COVID-19.
What can you do to support your health during the COVID-19 pandemic? Besides washing your hands, staying home, eating well, daily exercise, and getting enough sleep, you can boost your immune system with supplements like Vitamin C, D, and zinc. LET ME BE CLEAR: These supplements WILL NOT prevent contracting the virus, and they ARE NOT cures if you do. But if you have the virus these supplements COULD limit the severity of your symptoms. If you wish to know my personal immune-support regime, you can send me a private message. I offer this information at no charge.
This study is not conclusive, but it is concerning. To be on the safe side, a keto diet could be followed intermittently (a few weeks on, a few weeks off) rather than continuously.
Here is the study that I quoted about the cost of treating Type 2 diabetes. This study talks about obesity as a risk factor - but a recent study (see my other post today) shows that not being breastfed is another significant risk factor.
We have known for awhile the breastfeeding is best for babies. Now we know specific health risks from NOT breastfeeding. And by the way, in Canada we spend $15 billion treating type 2 diabetes over a 10 year period. New moms - Please do all you can to breastfeed!
