What causes periodontitis? The primary cause of periodontal (gum) disease is bacteria found in plaque. The damaging effects of these bacteria can be eliminated with proper home care (brushing twice daily and flossing once daily) and professional cleanings at least every six months from your friendly hygienists at Health First Dental. Other contributors to gum disease include:... What is Periodontal disease, exactly? We're glad you asked! Periodontal (gum) disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease begins when the bacteria in plaque(the sticky, colourless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed. ... In the mildest form of the disease, gingivitis, the gums redden, swell and bleed easily. If left untreated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. #yyc #dentist #yycdentist #yycliving #dentalimplants #dentalcare #blog #holistichealth #holisticdentistry #biologicaldentistry #biologicaldentist #dentist #healthmatters #healthfirstdental #fluoridefree #mercuryfree #oralhealth #healthyliving #healthyteeth #happyteeth #gumdisease #covid19

Did You Know? Until recently, a material that bonded best with the jawbone was titanium; however, many health-conscious patients avoid metals implanted into their bodies to eliminate the risk of absorbing metallic ions/compounds into their system. #yycnow #yycliving #yycdentist #biologicaldentist #yycblogsquad #dentist #healthmatters #healthfirstdental #fluoridefree #mercuryfree #oralhealth #healthyliving #healthyteeth #happyteeth

Losing a tooth can impact your self-esteem, bite harmony, jaw support, and jaw-joint health; however, most people are unaware of the bio-compatible tooth replacements available that don’t require the use of metals, dentures or invasive bridges. Dental implants have revolutionized the replacement of missing teeth, especially over the past decade! Keep an eye out for December’s blog post that will highlight the Pros and Cons of metallic vs non-metallic implants and what mater...ials we use here at Health First Dental. #yycnow #yycliving #yycdentist #biologicaldentist #yycblogsquad #dentist #healthmatters #healthfirstdental #fluoridefree #mercuryfree #oralhealth #healthyliving #healthyteeth #happyteeth

Last year’s Calendars for Mental Health was a huge success. I sold 130 calendars and was able to raise $1300 for the Calgary Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). Recently I have been motivated by the current mental health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to create another calendar of my original photography and again donate all profits to help those struggling with mental health. The latest survey by The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health reveale...d 21% of Canadian adults are currently experiencing moderate to severe anxiety, 25% are engaged in binge drinking, 20% feel lonely, and 21% feel depressed. CMHA found that the COVID-19 pandemic has made things worse for those already struggling with mental health, creating a 2 fold increase in mental health decline, a 3 fold increase in trouble coping, and a 4 fold increase in suicidal thoughts and self-harm. These numbers are disheartening, but I know from personal experience that help and change are possible with proper treatment and support. I am hoping to raise $2000 this year. Wall calendars (8.5x11) are $25 not including shipping. I have priced the calendars so each piece sold will produce $15 in donations to CMHA. If you are interested in purchasing a calendar, you can stop by my dental clinic or message me.
