It’s easy for a heavy workload to get you dragging laptops and briefcases between home and the office. This can easily take a toll on your neck, shoulders, and most definitely your back. Health First Wellness Centre is here to help with some handy tips and tricks on how to carry that heavy workload without injuring yourself! Choosing Your Bag 1. Choose lightweight material, like vinyl or canvas. 2. Choose a bag with wheels to take a load off.... 3. Choose a backpack style bag with large adjustable cushioned straps. 4. If you choose a one strap bag, make sure the strap is long, adjustable and padded. Poorly designed bags can put tension on the muscles and strain on the shoulder nerves. Packing Your Bag 1. Only include must have items in your bag. Check every morning before heading to work to remove any unnecessary items. 2. A laptop usually comes with many accessories like charger cables, battery packs, adaptor cords, and many other accessories. Consider having spare cables and accessories at the office so you do not need to carry them back and forth. 3. Pack the heaviest items at the bottom of your bag. 4. Use the outside and inside pockets. This helps to distribute the weight evenly. Carrying Your Bag 1. If using a backpack style bag, wear both straps and adjust so the bag has as little movement. The waist strap is also a good idea. 2. If using a single strap style bag, place the strap over the head on the opposite side of the laptop bag to help distribute the weight. Switch shoulders frequently.

Meet Jessica Triumbari, our massage therapist at Health First Wellness Centre! Jessica Triumbari has graduated from York University with a Specialized Honors Degree in Kinesiology. Following her undergraduate studies, she decided to pursuit a career in Massage Therapy and earned her diploma at Sutherland-Chan School of Massage Therapy. During her studies she worked at several community outreach programs and specialty clinics around the city of Toronto. Such programs include H...igh Risk Obstetrics at Sunnybrooke Hospital, Gynecological and Pelvic Floor Post-Operative at Toronto General Hospital, Pre-natal and Pregnancy clinic, Seniors clinic, Mental Health Transitional Homes, and a community Stroke Club. Through her experience Jessica has learned the benefits of massage therapy both physically, mentally, and emotionally for a range of populations and ultimately what the power of touch can do to heal others.
